Abstract (summary)
"We have a mentoring programme during management training so senior women are able to mentor women management trainees as a role model," Ms [Teresa Au Pui] said.
"We trust our employees. We were the first bank or major [non- government] organisation to announce a five-day working week, which was introduced in September last year," Ms Au said.
"I think the award is good recognition of what we have done to support women in recruitment and career development," Ms Au said. "We practise meritocracy."
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has been chosen as this year's Best Company for Women at the Women of Influence Awards 2007, beating multinational company Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.
One judge said the main reasons the seven-judge panel chose HSBC was its high representation of women in senior positions and its advocacy of volunteer work in the local community.
Teresa Au Pui-yee, HSBC's head of corporate responsibility and sustainability, Asia-Pacific, has worked for the bank for more than 20 years.
"I'm the chairperson of the diversity committee for Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific for HSBC and my role is in corporate responsibility and sustainability.
"I find that the two roles are related," she said.
"Part of the corporate responsibility is being responsible to our colleagues, providing them with equal opportunities ... and then supporting them to enable them to improve their work life in the bank.
"So I'm very much involved in the diversity initiatives that we roll out in the bank in Hong Kong and throughout the region.
