In contrary to a stage or screen performance, a documentary film displays real people living everyday life. For many viewers, the notion of documentary film is based on the genuineness of a normal individual playing his or her role in society; without being staged or designed by a producer. On November 20th, I attended Awesome Tapes from Africa at BAM Cafe in Brooklyn, NY. When I first arrived, the DJ, Brian Shimkovitz, hadn’t started his set yet so they were just playing regular music to pass the time. But I was shocked to see so many people had showed up just to see him. This was the first time I’ve heard of him and I was excited to see what he was going to play. As I was waiting for the show to start, I was expecting to see him walk in with guards or as soon as he walked in for everyone to ask for an autograph but I noticed that he was just walking around like he was also waiting for the show to start. He walked past me a couple times before I actually noticed and recognized him. From what I gathered from the BAM Cafe and…

I come from a family with a rich background in music. I don’t know a single family member that can’t play at least one instrument or doesn’t know how to read a piece of sheet music. When I was very young my mother would play music for me and sing to me. My father would also play the drums very loudly so the entire neighborhood could hear. Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. When I was in elementary school I decided to join the choir. This was a big moment for me because music was what made me want to get up and live my life, it was always something to look forward to.…
