Doctor Sleep In The Shining
Doctor Sleep is a sequel to the well-known horror novel, The Shining. It follows Jack Torrance’s son, Dan, who is continuing to live with his mother after their experience at the Overlook. Dan has an ability called ‘the shining’, which allows his to see and connect with ghosts and angry spirits, who follow and haunt him until he learns how to deal with them. Doctor Sleep follows Dan as he grows up and deals with his problems, his father’s problems, and his traumatic childhood experiences. The book also follows a group called The True Knot, who target people with the shining and feed off of their essence, called ‘steam’, in order to gain more power.

Now, a major theme I saw in Doctor Sleep was the feeling of being trapped. Danny is stuck in a living nightmare because of his ability, and is forced to deal with it. But even in his methods of trying to manage the shining, he is still trapped.

The first method is something that Dick Hallorann, the Overlooks former chef and a man who helped Danny and his mother during their stay there, teaches him. Dan knows that he is turning out like his father, and tries to quit drinking multiple times, without any successful attempts. After a particularly low moment, where Dan steals $70 from a single mother with a cocaine addiction, he flees again, and finds himself in New Hampshire, which is the first step in his new

Both Jack and Danny are mature in different ways. Danny, who is very young, only fiver years old, shows a lot of maturity. Not only is he very smart, but he also has a strong sense about what is morally right. Danny’s main concern is his family, and he uses his maturity to help him to decipher what to do in strenuous situation (180). On the other hand, Jack has all the intention of being a mature responsible person, but he can never fully achieve this because of his flawed character. Jack always tries to do right by his family, he even took a job so he could start over, and he stopped drinking. But despite his best efforts he can not handle all of it and manage his life the way Danny can. Jack can not come to terms with the fact that he has a problem with drinking, “It had nothing to do with willpower, or the morality of drinking, or the weakness or strength of his own character. There was a broken switch inside, or a circuit breaker that didn 't work.”(160). This shows that Jack has not yet come to terms with the fact that he has a drinking problem, he just thinks he was made that way. In order to be strong you have to accept your weaknesses and Jack clearly has not dealt with his own to be the type of man he…

Although prohibition's goal was to a increase sense of integrity in the United States, it encouraged normally law-abiding citizens to break the law, enabled the growth and influence of organized crime, and increased levels of corruption in government and law-enforcement. The purpose of Prohibition was to protect the values sheltered by “Americans” nuclear family (Clark 13). Prohibition in the United States was designed to reduce drinking by eliminating the businesses that manufactured, distributed, and sold alcoholic beverages. Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. Instead, Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; organized crime blossomed; courts and prisons systems became overloaded; and endemic corruption of police and public officials occurred. In 1919, America was torn with the decision of prohibiting liquor from being sold. There were many incentives to do so. However, political officials did not take into account that people would get what they wanted regardless of the law. With prohibition, America was set for an…
