The Marriage of the Virgin

Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael

I have chosen The Marriage of the Virgin as a document analysis because I want to contrast this work with works of Perugino, especially Christ giving the Keys to St Peter (1481-1482) and also The Marriage of the Virgin (1500-1504). Raphael was commissioned to produce the work by the Albizzini family of Città di Castello (scala 8) for the chapel of St Joseph in the Church of San Francesco. In comparison to the two works of Perugino the similarities are easily recognised. However although we can date Perugino's earlier work between 1481and1482, his Marriage of the Virgin can only be dated from between 1500 and 1504. Raphael helpfully named himself and dated his work in the middle of the temple and so we know definitely it was finished in 1504, so although it would seem likely, one should be cautious to date Perugino's Marriage of the Virgin earlier than Raphael's.

In 1504 Raphael was twenty one years old and was still an apprentice in the school of Perugino, and he executed it prior to his stay in Florence, and so it is natural to assume his work was still greatly influenced by his master. The painting has significant parallels with the Christ giving the Keys to St Peter in the Sistine Chapel. As in the earlier fresco, Raphael uses the same structural format. The pavilion is the dominating central focus which gives the depth of the scene in relation to the figures of the foreground. The figures between the pavilion and the frontal scene is proportional in size and shows Raphael's confidence in the use of perspective. The landscape shows the influence of Perugino, the viewer may get a sense of tranquility and stillness which one may also associate with the actual landscapes of Umbria, and speaking from experience I certainly did.

When looking in detail at the figures in the foreground one can see the

The two images I chose for the analysis paper are Martini, Simone and Lippo Memmi, Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita (1333) and Brunelleschi, Filippo, Dome of Florence Cathedral (1420-36). The reason I chose these are because they relate to the Catholic religion in different ways. The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita was the beginning of the Catholic art during the Gothic time period while the Dome of Florence Cathedral was not only a masterpiece of artwork it was also a breakthrough for the construction during that time and for the rest of history.…

The painting has linear perspective and in the horizon there are hills and buildings. The size of the figures in the painting diminishes as they reach the background, also depicting perspective. The vanishing point of the painting appears to be just above the middle of the pictures, where a crucifix is shown. The painting is symmetrical. There are about seven people on the right side of the painting while on the left side there is only two men, one kneeling and one standing. The left side of the painting is balanced by the amount of buildings in the horizon.…

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky. Fra Carnevale creates a mysterious, yet orderly, scene of subtle emotion and veiled heterogeneity.…

Angelico as an artist was not focused primarily on humanism unlike other artists during the Italian Renaissance, but rather he was dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church. Angelico was asked to create this fresco painting for the Dominican monks of San Marco in order to inspire the monks to immerse themselves in their religion (Kleiner). In this painting we see the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel on the stairs leading to the friar’s cells. We can see the classical elements shown in this painting through the arches and columns that the convent consisted of. Angelico shows great linear perspective in Annunciation, as well as pristine clarity and simplicity. The colors are a bit plainer, with hues of pinks, but give off an intimate feel that complimented the convent nicely. Mary and Gabriel look serene and accepting of their encounter- at peace with their exchange. Angelico’s interpretation of this famous scene was mostly affected by the convent he was part of. His religious views influenced the simple, quiet, yet remarkable painting in San…

Today it is almost impossible to prove that this painting was an official wedding document. Marriages of wealthy people were almost always social events. One of the reasons that you could see this as a legal document is because Jan is so accurate. Jan painted this wedding scene in the 14th century and in the 15th century this painting would not stand in court. Even if it was a contract it would take place at home and without a priest. The Catholic Church discouraged this type of marriage but it wasn't always denied. In the latter middle ages of France, you would have been excommunicated for such an action. Because of Arnolfini's social status it would have probably been required for Arnolfini to have a social wedding therefore Jan might have painted this before or after the wedding. From first glance you could presume that this painting has the potential to be a legal document but there are so many factors that state otherwise.…

The heavily-muscled grave-diggers emerge from murky shadows, the mourners are so much smaller that they seem placed some distance away, the officer directing operations beside the bishop is obscured and only the young man above the saint stands out poignantly in his red cloak. Characteristically, light imitates the action of the sun by falling from the right. The scene takes the viewer back to the age of the Church of the catacombs. Caravaggio was well accustomed to painting multi-figural compositions. His use of monumental figures in the foreground compared to the smaller figures behind them creates the depth that is not obvious otherwise due to the dark background. Although the classical niche he painted in the back wall indicates more depth than there would be otherwise. Best known for religious art, notably renowned for his vivid realism and rejection of his idealization. Caravaggio does this through his manipulation of space, his use of perspective, and his use of chiaroscuro and tenebrism. His figures emerge dramatically from the background. Again we have an action packed drama unfolding before us.…

From my perspective, but limited familiarity with works of art in general, the Raphael painting is significant in that it is considered a prime example of High Renaissance art and considered Raphael’s masterpiece. I believe it is also significant because as a component of the School of Athens (1509-1511) the painting over a period of 500 years continues to influence discussion and analysis among art historians and scholars.…

In this painting, the human figure is naturalistic, with shades to create a three-dimensional look. These are the features from Renaissance period. The painting has rich details on the human body, the clothes, the column and the landscape of Italian scenery in the background. In this painting, you see around 60 Greek philosophers arranged in a very large hall. The philosophers are talking to each other, discussing theories or mathematical queries. It symbolizes philosophic thinking and the search for truth. On the wall you can see paintings and statues. He has used contour lines with domes and actual line with figures. Personalities are arranged like actors in a tired architectural setting, Raphael has represented distinguished Greek philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle (the central figures) Socrates and Euclid. Composition has been ordered brilliantly, clearly revealing his outstanding ability. The placing of each figure and each group combine to produce perfect harmony, order and balance, and, even though some sixty figures are used in the composition, there is no crowding. Therefore painting is asymmetrical. The main focal point of the painting is on Plato and Aristotle. The painting has more emphasis on these two philosophers than the others because they are centered in the middle of the composition and they are the only two standing in front of hall entrance with sky surrounding them.…

During this time pieces of artworks were being produced at a strong rate. This was due that artists were gaining recognition over large areas. This new fondness of artwork that contained humanistic influences were new, and people were amazed by the style that had not been seen before in their lifetime. A large proportion of the artwork that was being made was made for the church and popes. One such artwork was the school of Athens, created by Raphael Sanzio, for the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City. This work is of a grand scale in that was commonly taken on by the artists of the time. This particular fresco is 16’’5’ by 23’’ 3’ and is one of Raphael’s more famous works. Just by looking at this fresco you can see the strong influence of humanism. The theme itself is a strong give away, for it has a landscape full of philosophers from ancient times. As the lines of the fresco draw your eye the center of the landscape, you see two of the giants of ancient Greek philosophy Aristotle and Plato. One of the reasons that your eye is drawn toward the center of the painting is because Raphael was able to use the concept of using a vanishing point to make this 2d painting 3d. This use of vanishing point is not only what shows humanistic characteristics for the time, but the amount of detail that is put into every person and the landscape around them. From the detail…

The art that I found the most interesting in the book “Gardner Art through Ages: The Western Perspective” was a painting named Birth of the Virgin. This painting is on chapter 14 page 415 and is figure 14-14. It is a large triptych meaning three part panel. The panel is separated by two white piers and includes arches at the top of each section. It was painted with Tempera on wood. It was created by Pietro Lorenzetti, an Italian Gothic painter of the Sienese school. Pietro Lorenzetti was a student of Duccio di Buonisegna. This painting has a dimension of 6’1’’ x 5’11’. It was originally located and created for the altar of Saint Savinus in the Siena Cathedral, Siena, Italy, in 1342. It is now housed in Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Siena, Italy. This painting appears to be a boxlike scene. It is three dimensional and gives a…

In the Middle Ages, figures were typically painted side-by-side with very little depth. A classic example of a painting from the late Middle Ages is Cimabue's Madonna Enthroned with Angels and Prophets. Cimabue's work, completed in Florence sometime between 1280 to 1290, depicts Mary and the Christ child, with angels on both sides of her and prophets painted below her with very little depth. Then in the Renaissance, artists began using linear perspective, so that figures could be seen one in front of the other. Also the Renaissance artists used light and shade to make their art appear more real. This linear perspective and use of light is also seen in Giotto's Arena Chapel masterpiece, the piece known for marking the beginning of Renaissance…
