The suburban life seems to be pretty split in terms of life style. From the reading, I've noted that adolescents experience either the relaxing/lazy or hardworking/tiring side of it. Some despise the 'vegetable' life of it, and others loathe the working life of it. Because of the isolation, cars became as important to adolescents as it was to adults. There was virtually no way to get around most suburbs without a car, and for those who needed public transportation, cities remained essential.
