Does Age Affect Reaction Time
HYPOTHESIS

As you may already know aging is a natural thing that occurs in everyone’s life. When

we are born there will be a time when we are no longer young as we used

to be before, but in fact we will start to age as the years go by. This can affect how we

react to certain things and how quickly we respond. People who are older have nerve

impulses that react more slowly and will have a slower reaction time than people who

are younger. I think that as we grow older our reaction time does decrease.

MATERIALS ruler paper/pen

stopwatch

chairs and a location to do this experiment

measuring tape
6 volunteers (all with different variations of age)
PROCEDURE

1. Have all the materials and volunteers prepared.

This experiment was easy to do and will allow you to learn about how age affects

people’s reaction time. If I had to do this experiment again, I would change a few

things in this experiment, I would have gotten more volunteers that had a big age

difference. I would also want to test this experiment about 20 times to get the best

results. Instead, of just having the people grab a falling ruler I would have wanted to

run a series of tests to see what certain things the different age groups react better to.

Although after many attempts and fails I just decided that timing how fast it takes for

people to catch the ruler would be the best choice rather than my other option which

was using the ruler measurements of the ruler to record how long it took for them to

catch it because there were times when people would move their thumb and the

measurement would be inaccurate. I believe that everyone should try this experiment

especially little kids because as I said earlier this is a great and fun way to teach kids

about how our brain reacts to things and how age affects reaction

Throughout your life the process of ageing is constantly influencing your identity. As William Shakespeare wrote “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts,…”. Our identity is forever changing and this is because we are forever ageing. Throughout out the three main stages of ageing – youth, middle age, elderly- we don’t just age physically, we age physiologically as well. Hence as we age we mature, become wiser and more aware of the world around us. As of this our views change from each stage of life, thus inflicting our identity to change. Although some people find this transition from one stage of life to the next to be difficult and dread upon its occurrences whereas others enjoy ageing and just take it as it comes.…

390 West Point cadets that are all enrolled in PL 100 took part in an experiment designed to test both their simple reaction times as well as their choice reaction times; each participant was subject to both the experimental and control groups. What the experiment consisted of was a simple task in which the participant had to press any key as fast as possible upon being presented with a single stimulus. The other task consisted of two different stimuli appearing, in no particular order or pattern, on a computer screen and the participant had to choose between two keys to click according to the color of each stimuli. After receiving all the data, it was obvious that the simple reaction times were quicker than the choice reaction time.…
