Antigone is considered as the hero of this play as she follows the law of morals and doesn’t care about what the fellow-beings on earth think of her. According to her if anything is correct then she will do that instead of it being against the laws of the land. She comes to Thebes with her sister Ismene to avoid the prophecy that their brothers are going to kill each other in a battle for the Crown of Thebes .Once her mother committed suicide and her father died she felt it as a responsibility to accompany her brothers who were ready to kill each other .She really didn’t wanted that any other person should reap the fruits of the fight between those two, which unluckily …show more content…
happened with Creon, uncle of Antigone becoming the King Of Thebes .These are two main characters of this play who stuck on their beliefs and didn’t realized what they were really doing i.e., they were harming themselves .Firstly, Antigone was risking her life and digging her own grave and on the other side Creon was creating hatred for himself in the eyes of his own people in the estate.
The conflict between Antigone and Creon had its origin in the times when Polyneices & Eteocles killed themselves to death, but Eteocles was considered correct in the eyes of the people of Thebes because he was fighting for the peace of the land and on the other hand Polyneices, who was against Eteocles in the battle, was …show more content…
considered as a betrayer to the land .This resulted in Creon becoming the king of Thebes. He ordered a proper holy burial of Eteocles dead body, but Polyneices was not given a proper burial per se the orders of Creon as his body was left open for dogs and vultures to eat .Creon passed an order which said that whoever tries to bury Polyneices will not be spared and will have to face harsh consequences.
Thereafter ,Antigone came to know about the condition of her brother’ s dead body and she tried to convince Ismene for carrying out the particular plan to which Ismene denied by saying that it was against the orders of the King and it will be wrong to do that ,Antigone made up her mind and went on to bury his(Polyneices) body and put holy water onto him without thinking of what can happen with her in the future as per the orders of his uncle ,Creon..This action of her’s was later on reported to Creon by a guard .From now onwards she becomes an admirable person in the eyes of the audience who doesn’t fears death and such a hero who follows her moral values that she considers as the law of Gods. This angered Creon, as he didn’t expected anyone to take an action against his order and that too one of his own relative ( sister of brave Eteocles). She was taken to the court by the guard in front of angry King. She confessed that she was the one who carried out the burial of Polyneices and she is ready to face any action against herself. This shows the traits of her blood as her father Oedipus was also a man of pride
.She got ready to sacrifice her life for Polyneices honor and respectful burial. As she was confessing that she was the one who did that particular wrong as per Creon’s orders ,Ismene came there and she also joined her and she also took her name in that saying that she was also involved in the commission of this wrong. But Antigone tells the truth that she was neither involved in the conspiracy neither in the deed keeps her sister in a safe position .Antigone realizes that Ismene is also a good person as she didn’t feared in front of Creon while telling that she was also guilty, she showed the traits of loyalty towards her dead brother and the principles of her sister and realized that Antigone was correct in taking this step and was proud of her sister. For Antigone the law of God is everything and she followed them without any fear but on the other hand Creon thought his orders to be equivalent to that of Gods(which was the reason that he got so angry with Antigone’s act). After Antigone’s confession Creon passed an order for her execution .She was to be kept in a close cave until she dies . She felt happy at first because she was going to die for the act in which she believes in. Later on when she was being carried on the way to the deadly cave she started fearing death and she for the first time started blaming her family. She realized that she was close to the sight of death that her father and both her brothers have faced. She killed herself to death .On the other hand at the same time the bling prophet of that time told Creon to release Antigone from the cave otherwise his life would become hell and he who believes that whatever he says is right and no one else is right, later faces the consequences of loneliness in his life .Haemon, Creon’s son who had deep love towards Antigone also pleaded for her release to which Creon finally agreed. When he went on to take Antigone out of the cave he then realized that it was bit too late from his side as she was already dead. His son kills himself at the sight of Antigone’s dead body which grieves Creon a lot as it is the worst sight on earth for a father to see his son die infront of him. He realized that the prophecy of that blind phophect was coming out to be as a truth in front of him in the worst of its forms. He carried his sons body to his palace where he reaches and sees that his beloved wife has also killed herself. He was completely engrossed with despair and wished to killed himself and he didn’t wanted to live a day more.
At last this play concludes with the lines and the scenes depicting that one should not think that he is the supreme power even though he owns the throne of the king because there is someone above all who decides our fate i.e.,God. When one goes against the rules of the land and carries on to do what is morally correct then he should not fear anyone because that is the right path that one should follow in his life. Don’t fear the wrong doers because god is going to decide their fate and they will have to eat the fruits of the same seeds which they have sown throughout their lives..
