Fermina is the character affected by the standards of society the most in Love in the Time of Cholera.
She is affect by society ever since she was young. Fermina’s father, Lorenzo Daza, had a lot of control over what she did and who she was with. Her father also doesn’t like the fact that she is infatuated with Florentino because he wasn’t rich and did not have a good name. On page eighty-one Lorenzo Daza states, “The only thing worst than bad health is a bad name”. Lorenzo didn’t want his daughter to end up with someone with who wasn’t well respected or had a good job. Because of the way Fermina’s father though she didn’t have much say in whether or not she wanted to marry Dr.
Urbino.
Another reason Fermina is affected by society is after Dr. Urbino dies she’s worried how people would view or even think of her if she went to be with Florentino. Fermina doesn’t want to end up going away with Florentino right after her husband dies because she doesn’t want people judging her and saying that she didn’t actually love Dr. Urbino. Along with not wanting to be judged by others if she moved on right after her husband’s death is how the women in the higher class thought about her. They did not know why Dr. Urbino would want to be with Fermina since she wasn’t the same class as them and that they also grew up with being wealthy but Fermina hasn’t. With them not knowing why Dr.Urbino would choose Fermina, they did know that she was probably a better person than them.
As you can see, Fermina is affected the most by the standards of society and not Dr. Urbino. Fermina is affected by society because her father had a lot of control over what she did and that she doesn’t want to be judge for going off with Florentino after Dr. Urbino dies.
