Many people look at GMOs with a sort of view as if to ask: Why should I eat new GMO crops, when I could eat a crop that has been around for millennia? What they don’t understand, is that there is really no such thing as a crop that scientists just altered. People have been modifying plants since the creation of agriculture twelve thousand years ago. The risks to our health and exposed for using genetically modified crops or plants have not been yet proven because we are too early in the game of this genetically modification and engineering process. Thinking that this is a small solution to our problem for hunger and feeding Americans, then maybe they are just creating more problems that may not have solutions for in the future. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. Def/Explanation: Firstly, GMO is an acronym for Genetically Modified Organisms. What this concept is can be briefly explained by the following analogy. Suppose I take Iman* and Ibrahim* to take part in a science experiment. I take some of Iman’s genes, duplicate it and put it in Ibrahim’s body. Then I present Ibrahim in front of you all and tell you that this new Ibrahim is far stronger, efficient and beneficial to all of you and the society. My opinion on GMOs is bias. I say that GMOs are good because they food is made and delivered quicker because if we the world was extremely against GMOs then the food you bought would last as long. Therefore if you look more into this the world could starve for how much time people would wait for the normal fruit/vegetable to delivered. The two articles I have chosen are both peer-reviewed and have two different opinions about GMO’s. The first article, titled “GMO’s and Global Justice” by Kristian Toft, is against the use of GMO’s, explaining how they are bad for us as human beings and for our environment. Her biggest concern is that we do not know the extent of what these genetically modified foods are doing to our bodies because of the lack of long-term affect testing. When trans-fats were first introduced, corporations battled to get them onto our grocery shelves. It is only decades later that this once novel food has been proven to be extremely unhealthful. To answer the question ‘’Are GMOs Safe To Eat?’’ I personally don’t believe they are because, there is not enough research looking into the long term effects and I don’t believe we are told the whole truth when it comes to this social and ethical topic, but GMOs can benefit us if proper regulations and safety checks are done. The biggest concern I have is actually not food safety, but the environmental impact. GMOs can be toxic to other organisms, can create huge ecological shifts and, biodiversity is put into risk. The difference between the characters was that Cohn engaged in homosexual activity frequently; he was not in self-denial like Joe. Another difference is that Joe eventually tells people he is a homosexual. Cohn never does this because he thinks it would ruin his reputation, and would diminish the power he has over others. Many people are against Genetically modified foods because of the unknown long term effects and environmental effects. There were concerns about how GMO’s can affect other animals. “ GMOs may be toxic to non-target organisms, bees and butterflies being the most talked-about examples currently. The side effects and the damage on humanity have not been tested yet and when somebody meddles with DNA, anything can happen.
