The term “Patriot” was first coined in the ancient Roman republic, but was soon amended to “Patriotism” in the eighteenth-century. The term was used to indicated the loyalty that one individual had for a certain item, place, person, or object. According to the article “Patriotism” by Andrew Vincent, the term can be defined “to participate in relations of, for example, friendship, community, nationhood, citizenship, or marriage implies normative conventions” (29). For example, if two lovers are loyal to each other in a relationship or even a marriage, they can be considered patriots to each other. In Barack Obama’s case, he is a patriot to our nation. Little do we know that he is also a patriot to his wife and to his children as a husband and a father. His followers can be patriots to him by giving him support and advice when it is needed. Yes he works for the government, but he is not a patriot because of that. He’s a patriot because of his loyalty to his family and to the country of the United States of America.
