The American people having derived their origin from many other nations, and the Declaration of National Independence being entirely based on the great principle of human equality, these facts demonstrates at once our disconnected position as regards any other nation; that we have, in reality, but little connection with the past history of any of them, and still less with all antiquity, its glories, or its crimes. Paul Johnson’s “A History of the American People” serves as a concise summary of the foundation of the United States of America, a nation that has had more impact on the world today than perhaps any other. Johnson’s work starts from the earliest beginnings of Europeans in America and traces the evolution that our nation has experienced up to the modern time. Johnson highlights some of the fundamental differences between American history and that of practically all other nations. Unlike other countries, we have original documents dating back to the origins of the United States that explain who was responsible for what in the creation of our state. Furthermore, the United States, unlike any other country at the time, was founded on the principles of equality, liberty, and democracy. Finally, Johnson explains that there are still many black marks on the history of the United States, open for all to see, that we must correct for if we are to continue as a model for the entire world.…

Let the word go forth from this time and place to friend and foe alike that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.…

The least we can do is to thank you. You gave me a future, freedom of speech, and an education, and so many more things.…

“This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.” This quote was borrowed from Franklin Delano Roosevelt describing “the Greatest Generation” found in “The Time of Their Lives,” written by Tom Brokaw (Brokaw, 1998). Roosevelt must have foreseen the future before speaking that comment about that generation of America since they won World War Two. However they shall take a look at two authors that certainly have a difference of opinions on the rendezvous that Roosevelt mentioned so many years ago.…

American History has been filled with countless of hardships such as wars, political division, and racial struggles. In the more recent months it seems that instead of moving forward and away from these past hardships, the country is moving backwards into a new time of division. The division is coherent with social tension and division within the political parties. If a person didn’t live through certain events, then it’s easy for them to stay in the same retrospective cycle. When looking at past events, it’s evident that there are certain ideologies that have stayed prevalent and currently, we see an evolved way that these same ideologies have manifested in modern day events. There is clear evidence that there is a historical antecedent to…
