C) Do you think that we live in a post-racial society? What do you think is the state of race in the USA? Explain your answer.…
Even though I was learned a lot so far about race and ethnicity my beliefs and views on race are still the same. I believe everyone should be treated equal and have the same amount of opportunity to succeed and provide for themselves and their families. I don’t think that is the case all the time. For example, an employer who is looking to hire someone may call a white American over a black American. The implicit association test is a tool that people are attempting to use to prevent people from being bias when hiring for a job or making a big decision. Which I believe is a step in the right direction on becoming more equal as a…
The sayings ‘crack is wack’ and ‘crack babies’ has came for this period of 8 years. During the Reagan presidency life for colored people were terrible. If you were caught with crack cocaine you got a way longer sentence than anyone caught with powdered cocaine. Angela Davis, counterculture activist and from the 13th, explains, “ ...War on drugs was a war on communities of color.. Nearly genocidal in poor communities”. According to Debbie Howlett, “Reagan cut budget of Department of wife, Hillary Clinton called black children “super-predators”. Clinton’s 1994 crime bill changed everything about the judicial system. Prisons expanded police force expanded. In the documentary the 13th, the showing of the prison population is shown. From 1980 there was 513,900…
Race is one of the main reasons I am where I am today, and how I am perceived to people. The biological term for race is that races “are distinct genetically divergent populations within the same species with relatively small genetic differences (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(biology).” Another definition to explain race is “ a category of people widely perceived as sharing socially significant physical characteristics such as skin color” (Professor Watkins Feb. 13). Everyone sees my race, which is, Caucasian to be a privilege to our society. In the article, Racial…
Race is a factor of life that is constantly being judged by society. Society has created individuals who judge others on skin color, and ethnicity; spawning hate and spreading acceptance of different set of standards to each race. “Largely about what wealthy… white men wear in silicon valley and wall street” (Sengupta 228). Race is part of the identity, most of the time it determines how you are treated by others, how one’s life is lived, and which stereotypes are carried. “... from racist people who think all Asians look the same! or ...Why on earth would you say something like that?” (Chung para. 9). Race is the…

I believe it should matter to an extent. Not only is race an identity that we can grasp and claim as our own it can help mold us into becoming whoever we are today. Per “What is Race and why does it matter so much?” by Dr. Benjamin Johnson “Race is a biological, social, and descriptive concept”. With that in mind as our definition, it is to say that each race should look a certain way and have certain traditions, things that “this” race must do. Maybe because of news, friends, or stories they heard about the race.…
An irrational set of classifications, arbitrarily marked on the body by science A political division, responsible for the bad (Jim Crow) and the good (anti-apartheid) A mode of sight Racial profiling is a police practice, rooted in the response to urban disorder in the 1970s, and which suggested that attention to small details would produce big victories in the war against crime. The basic contentions of racial profiling as police practice are that: If you are black or brown makes it more likely that you are a criminal If you stop frisk and search people who are black or brown, you are statistically more likely to catch a criminal Including race in a criminal profile does not lead to statistically greater misidentifications than any other indicator Racial Profiling It also relies on common sight. That is, the ability to see difference in a profile. Since 9/11, the ordinary citizen has been enlisted in the campaign. Typically, in American culture, muscle bound heroes are presented as racially simple The logic of racial mixture (the one drop rule) has two basic tenets 1. One drop of black blood makes a person black, though the reverse is not true 2. Except in cases where Native American blood is concerned. Or where the mixture is with a non-white, non-black population. Natty Bumpo Daniel Day Lewis…
How does/did race effect American education? Well Integration brought more of a positive effect while segregation brought more of a negative effect to education. Or should I say it brought more of a negative effect to all if not most of the blacks education. Now you may be wondering How? Well, things were not equal and therefor black students didn’t have it all that fair because the white students had more than the blacks did. Whether it was neighborhoods, schools, or teachers.…
Does race play a significant role in conflicts in America? The obvious is yes, but the real question is why? Black skinned Americans and their white American counterparts have been entangled in some form of conflict in society since the inception of America. The conflict between races for black people has been documented such as the horrors of slavery, the Jim Crow era, and the Civil Rights movement. However, white skinned Americans are not exempt from unfair treatment from their black counterparts. Many pale skinned Americans are excluded from joining other minority groups even if they share a heritage with these groups. With a multitude of issues, variables, and subcategories of differences, each color can feel alienated from the other.…
Post-racial America means "a theoretical environment in which the United States is free from racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice" (Wikipedia). Despite America being a multicultural, heterogeneous country, often referred to as a "melting pot", such idealistic concept seems to be a far-fetched dream. Many saw the election of Barack Obama, the country's first black president, as a step forward in race relations and a sign that America is willing to put its racist past behind. After all, racism and ethnic discrimination in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial and the slave eras. However, even today it is arguable whether we can call the American society free from racial discrimination, hostility, hate crimes, and the unjust treatment of minorities. Statistics and poll results prove the doubts in the existence of post-racial society.…
Race and inequality continue to affect quality education in America. These factors continue to represent a major problem in social stratum in both emerging and successful countries. Inspite of some work the government has done to eliminate prejudice for example, make the law strict against racism, some people still continue to spread racism. Racism continues in numerous countries, such as the United states. Race continue to affect the quality of education…

When I hear the word “race”, the first thing that I think of is a person’s skin color, facial features and the texture of their hair. Although I am colorblind, I can’t help but to think of this when I hear the word race. This is due to the fact that the majority of the time when we fill out an application or any paperwork of importance the question of race is raised. I’m not sure why it matters, your experience and education seems more important to me. It seems as if some people still want to separate us depending on the color of our skin. Being that there’s so many races mixing, there’s no such thing as a pure race. Race seems to be unimportant to me. Ethnicity is a word that I prefer and enjoy when speaking of culture. Ethnicity makes me think of everybody’s struggle dating back from their ancestors to the present. Where did your ancestors originate? Where did you come from? Ethnicity is ones background and cultural differences. For example just because I am considered black doesn’t mean that I am from Africa; which means that I will be considered an African American. I thought for years that I was an African American till an African man that I was friends with broke it down to me and gave me some knowledge to read. He is considered an African American because he’s from Africa and now resides in America. I am considered to be a black American because I’m from America. This is weird being that my ancestors were American Indians. Your ethnicity is the group that others place you. I do have my personal opinion on all of this and why America still tries to identify us by race. Since my opinion was asked I felt the need to tell the truth on how I feel. Race and ethnicity are important in America because some people in the government still strives for division and don’t want us to come together as one. It seems as if the government gets more powerful when we separate ourselves from each other. If we all were to come together I…
