Does the amount of calories you eat in a day affect how many hours you sleep at night?
TASK:
My aim is to determine the relationship between the number of calories someone consumes in a day and the number of hours someone sleeps at night. Food is consumed as fuel; it contains calories that give you energy, and those calories burn off as you use them. The definition of a calorie is the amount of heat required at a pressure of one atmosphere to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius. I want to see if the amount of “energy” someone takes in affects how they sleep.
In order to collect my data and control the variable, I will be collecting data from students in Mrs. Long’s IB Studies classes. Therefore, the range of age will be controlled from ages 16-18. For a student to determine how many calories they consume in a day, they should make an estimate of how they eat over an entire week. If they cannot make a decent guess of how many calories they consume in an average day, they do not participate in the survey. The survey will be kept anonymous as the names of participants will be represented by a number.
This is the survey I will be using : What is your age?
□14 □15 □16 □17 What is your gender?
□Male □Female What is your ethnicity? Select all that apply.
□American Indian or Alaskan Native □Asian or Pacific Islander □Black or African American □Hispanic or Latino □White/Caucasian □Prefer not to answer In a typical day, how many calories do you consume?
□0-500 □600-1100 □1200-1700 □1800-2300 □2400-2900 □3000-3500 □3600-4100 In a typical night, how many hours do you sleep?
□0-2 □3-5 □6-8 □9-11 □13-15
The answers to Numbers 4 and 5 will be the average of the box checked (for example, □1200-1700 will be taken down in the data table as 1450, as (1200+1700)/2=1450.
I will be using scatterplots to demonstrate the potential correlation in my data. I will find the r correlation coefficient and, if appropriate, the regression equation.
My intent in this project is to determine if there is a correlation between how many

We learned from the chapter that a “calorie: is a unit of energy, just like a kilowatt-hour or a joule. These units, represent the amount of “heat energy” it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. When we burn the food items and capture the heat in the water, we will use the following formula, our initial and final temperatures and we can calculate the energy released from each food item.…
