Question:
Does the Underground man have a freedom of choice?
Your Answer (just yes or no):
Yes.
Opposing Argument 1:
The Underground man does not have a choice to live outside. For the reason that people in the upper world are not “mindful enough” and they will never understand him and his perception about the life. It is not the underground man’s choice to be born in such society. If he had a choice, he would be able to be in the society, where he could be pleased. Finally, he does not belong to the upper world, and he does not even need to be there.
Opposing Argument 2: …show more content…
He does not have freedom to do what he pleases.
Whenever he wants to accomplish something, he has to consider the opinions of public. The public always has a comment on his actions. If he had freedom, he would surely be able to achieve his every single goal, and he would have his own rules. Individuals need to have freedom of will. In addition, the society should not control people’s actions; it should not bound them with its norms, rules and the values.
Opposing Argument 3:
Your position (thesis):
The underground man has a choice to get out from his own “cave” and the isolated ideology. He could have chosen to be more open to new ideas, and more positive. However, he wants to be alone and stays in his own little cave.
Explanation and Arguments for your
position:
Refutation of Opposing Argument 1:
He has a freedom of choice; he has an opportunity to open up. However, he uses this chance in a different way and chooses to be alone in his “cave” by blaming people on his actions. He thinks he is the most intelligent and conscious. However, the truth is – he is just a spiteful, sick and the most pessimist person of his society. He is not supposed to be such critical about everything. If the man was born in a certain society, it means that he has to adopt to that habitation and individuals by communicating. It is obvious that he fails on this.
Refutation of Opposing Argument 2:
The Underground Man is not capable of using his intelligence accurately. He wants to harm people in a very despicable way whenever it seems to be possible. However, his society limits him by judging, and challenging with its norms and rules. Individuals should not be able to do whatever they please, and consider as the “right thing to do”. Because it gives him or her an opportunity to act abnormal, that might become harmful for every person. Finally, the society HAS TO bound and control human beings in order to have a stable life.
Refutation of Opposing Argument 3:
The God creates underground man’s fate, and he does not get to choose his own. He is a human that is isolated from the public, and often critiqued by other “fools”. God creates him in a way that is not changeable. For him, everything has been decided by the Laws of Nature; what is possible and what is not. His fate decides that he should be seen as a bad person in his life. The Underground Man did not choose to have such nature.
Human’s fate does not depend only on creation and Nature laws. Mostly, or to be exact 99% of human future and life depends on their actions and decisions. The Underground man blames the nature for creating him “spiteful”. The reality is that if a person was created bad, it does not mean that he or she cannot change people’s perceptions. It just takes some energy and time.
