Does Working In Groups Benefit Students
Working in groups helps students get A’s. It also helps the student learn more. Working in groups benefits students because they will listen better to other students, they can bounce ideas off of each other, and positive peer pressure will help them work. Students always listen better to their friends. If a student likes somebody and they start talking that student will be more attentive and hear ideas better. They are automatically paying more attention because they are talking to their friend. They wouldn’t get as distracted either. They would not have as much trouble listening to ideas, too. Students could also trade ideas. They could help each other with the ideas they are struggling with. Maybe one student comprehends ideas better than the other, then that student could help. That would mean faster work times for students. Along with better comprehension. …show more content…
If one student doesn’t want to work, maybe the other students could persuade them to contribute. It would be more fun for the student to work. Plus, if the student got the answer wrong, the students around could help them understand it. Some may say that students wouldn’t help each other, that they would just get distracted, well, they could, but if a student really needed help, and it counted as a group grade, the other students would help. Initially, I had a negative view on group working because of the challenges that I had. When I was in high school, my five other friends and I used to work together in a music competition. Although we were supposed to get together to practice for the event, we were only able to meet up once a week. In addition to having a hard time with time scheduling, we often did not have a consensus of opinion. Whenever we had a discussion, we usually ended up with no results. So it always took a long time for us to make a decision. Consequently, the performance did not turn out as well as we expected. Because of this initial failure, I thought group work was time consuming and ineffective. However, I have changed my opinion lately because of the successful results in some of my laboratory classes. In each laboratory assignment, it is nearly impossible to work by myself because there are a lot of steps and each step needs to be very precise and accurate. Therefore, a group of two or three students will work more effectively compared to an individual because they can help to remind each other and finish the assignment faster. Based on those experiences, one more time I give myself a chance to work in a group and figured out how work effectively. Finally, thank to the Small group communication class, I found out that group work can become very productive if all the members in the group cooperate and follow the principles of small group communication. In this paper, I want to talk…

This also gives the children the chance to help each other in the group because they would be at the same stages and most likely get caught out at the same sections. According to Vygotsky, “By letting students of similar but differing abilities work in groups, they can help each other: often a lot more effectively than a teacher would be able to.” (Urbano, 12/07/12, Scaffolding and Peer-learning: Thinking about Vygotsky’s “Zone of Proximal…

The purpose of this strategy would be to have the students work together to arouse curiosity and help them learn the material. Sometimes students will be more eager to learn if they are working within a small group setting. It gives them a more individualized approach to the material than in a whole class setting. They may be more motivated to participate within a small group setting. To apply this strategy, I would separate the students into multiple small groups of 3-4 students each. Then I would assign a worksheet or problem for them to work through together. They would then have an additional problem or worksheet to work on individually and when finished use peer review to review their work.…

At first, some of scholars believed that collaborative learning could assist students to accomplish tasks in a team and can learn from each other. They can share their knowledge, skills and resources with other team members. Collaborative learning will bring positive study performance for students and able to improve their personal skills. In the team, all members can help each other and will solve the problem together (Hardy, et al, 2005; Waite & Davis, 2006). Under this circumstance, it will help students to establish a sense of team working with their peers by sharing knowledge to the same target. They will be acknowledging that to study in a group will be more efficiency by working individually and also will learn their shortage from other peers. From my experiences there have been several cons to come out of working in a group. Although we ended up with a good grade on the project, the waiting on other’s material, trying to get everyone to meet at the same time, etc. was very nerve racking. It’s very difficult to work in a group where the mindset of each individual is different. The care and concern for the course and/or project is not the same for each individual. Not to mention if there are negative personal feelings among some or all of the group members. These are some of the issues I’ve found myself to be faced with in the past when working in a group. All it takes is that “one” person to affect the outcome of the entire group.…
