“We need, in a special way, to work twice as hard to help people understand that the animals are fellow creatures, that we must protect them and love them as we love ourselves,” said César Chávez. Animals are apart of this world and play just as an important role as we do, but they’re often treated with less respect and as if they’re worth less. There’s so much mistreatment of animals around the world and humans are the root cause of it all. People even turn to abusing pets, although some believe that they’re family. Dog fighting occurs in many places all around the world and along with it comes the mistreatment of animals, negative impacts against the society and animals, and people who are desperately trying to solve the issue. …show more content…
First of all, the dogs who are used to fight are mentally and emotionally scarred. For example, during their time spent fighting, they realize that fighting is good; it gives them the love they desire and all they strive for is to please their owners (Larson). The dogs don’t realize that they’re doing something wrong, they just want the attention that all pets crave. In a sense, how they are treated is a mind game because they don’t wish to fight, but they do so to keep their owners happy and they know that if they don’t, they’ll go back to isolation. Furthermore, because of the fact the dogs are deemed mentally unstable, only 40% of the rescued dogs are adoptable, leaving 60% to be euthanized since they’re too aggressive and appear to be beyond rehabilitation (Larson). Although some of the dogs have a chance of getting adopted, it can take years of rehabilitation to do get them in the necessary conditions for adoption (Greenwood). In addition, as a result of dog fighting, there is an estimation of tens of thousands of dogs who die yearly (Greenwood). This is a large amount of lives that could be saved by stopping this cruel source of entertainment. Oftenly at sites, ashes that consist of dog remains can be found, whether the dogs were killed while fighting or by their owner (Greenwood). This is very inhumane, especially considering the fact that dogs are such loving animals; never harming animals or people deliberately …show more content…
Although this is the case, it’s difficult to locate rings and to hear about it because most people know it can get them in trouble, so they avoid talking publically about participating in dog fighting (Larson). In addition, it has been made illegal to attend dog fights in many countries, but there’s still a long way to go considering some places around the world still believe it’s okay to do. For example, it was made illegal in the U.S. in 2014, but that also shows how many years people have gotten away with dog fighting since it’s been around for so long (Greenwood). Also, in Abu Dhabi the government has been currently tightening the restrictions on dog ownership and the ability to import them to help put an end to abuse, such as dog fighting (Webster). They have began to refuse to return dogs if they are in bad conditions as well, since it’s an indicator of dog fighting, especially considering the location (Webster). When it comes to Japan, a country where dog fighting is very common, there are animal rights, but they are very weak. Although many people are for dog fighting, there are animal welfare groups in Japan that realize how wrong it is and they are working to stop it (Wofford).Furthermore, it’s encouraged that people look for signs of dog fighting in their local areas. If someone assumes that dog fighting is occurring, they are to
