I chose becoming a dog groomer because of my compassion for animals. I would have chosen a vet but it would have broken my heart to have to put animals down or not be able to help them. So the next best thing to helping an animal is grooming. People may think it’s an easy job but after following around the two groomers that I did for the last couple month’s I have a better appreciation for them. There are many steps and different job’s behind being a groomer whether you work for yourself or work for someone else. When becoming a groomer you have to decide whether you want to work for yourself or work for someone else. Once you figure out which one will suit you then the fun really starts. If you work for yourself you have to figure out a location and what size animals you want to bring in. Then start getting materials such as cages, shampoo, brushes, combs, clippers, blades, scissors, clipper coolant, and oil for blades, dog cologne, and various other sprays. If you work for someone else see how compatible you are with the owner and other employees, what kind of products they have, what kind of products you need to supply, how pay rate will be, the hours you can work and about clients. Once all of that is taken care of you can either go to grooming school or shadow a mentor until you feel comfortable enough to groom yourself. One of the groomers I shadowed went to school through the Pet smart program she said it was a 6 month program the other did shadowing another groomer and it was about a year before she started grooming on her own. After watching both of them they are pretty similar in their grooming techniques. They both were great teachers when they were showing me the ins-and-outs of grooming.
