In the book ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime’ there are many themes that are crucial to the story. The most important theme is the struggle for Christopher to become independent. Throughout the book Christopher is trying to gain self confidence, break free from his dads grasp and, discover who he really is. The whole book Christopher is trying to gain self confidence.
Christopher’s struggle to become independent primarily involves him gaining the self-confidence needed to do things on his own and moving beyond his comfort zone.
Solving his neighbours’ dogs murder would help Christopher build self confidence with talking to strangers and with his logic and puzzle skills. He would also
have to go into an unknown setting to solve the murder. The A-level math test also represents self confidence for Christopher. By doing well on the test, Christopher can use the test to get into college, allowing him to live on his own and become independent from his dad.
Christopher wanted to become independent from his dad. Christopher didn’t like his dad being controlling and telling him what to do. For instance, when his dad told him not to search into the death of his neighbours’ dog, it only made him want to do it more. Another example is when he got put in jail for a few hours, he could only think about escaping and not about his dad being upset or disappointed. When Christopher finds out his mom is still alive, he thinks his dad would hurt him and that if he doesn’t break free from his dad his safety will be in jeopardy. Christopher escapes from his dad and heads to the train station.
Christopher tries to figure out who he really is at the end of the book when he travels to London. He sets out on a solo journey to find his long lost mother who was previously perceived to be deceased. He overcame many fears on this journey, including talking to strangers, and travelling to new places. Christopher learned many things on his journey and after finding his mother, he gained courage, and confidence that will help him in the future with different tasks.
In the book ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime’ the most important theme is the struggle for Christopher to be independent.
