1. Section one: Given the phrase “Language is thought” please describe how the video explains how Beowulf became “a literary classic”. The anglo saxons clung to their old home and ways through poems such as this. It has the key elements of the heros journey as the hero fights monsters, goes on adventures, and in the end finds himself. He also attracts the imagination and appeals to the readers emotions.

2. Section two: What does the site of the Sutton Hoo excavation do for the sustainability/ believability of the Beowulf manuscript? The many stories of buried treasure as well as the people dreaming saw gold on this land. This sparked the interest in the land and helped motivate them to begin excavating. they found a massive ship beneath the earth. On this boat, treasures told in the opening of Beowulf, appear to be located on her.

Beowulf is an old Anglo Saxon poem that got told throughout many years by scops and would be accompanied by a lyre. It was very famous and would be told often at different places where there were a lot of people. This poem is one of the first to be told in the old-english language. However after various years of being told it finally got written down. But recently, there have been various movies that have been produced that tell the poem of Beowulf, the warrior who fought bravely against monsters.     Beowulf was originally written as a pagan oral tradition before the Christian monks infused their religion into it. The epic hero showed his faith to God as he battled the monsters and depicted the world of Christianity. However, the ideas in the poem are presented in both Christian God and pagan power which exemplifies Wyrd. Christianity and paganism are at opposite ends of the religious spectrum and each represent different beliefs and customs.     Beowulf is written in old english which many students find hard to understand. The film version of the poem helps to clear up any foggy interpretations of the writing. An argument that has been made is that students will neglect the writing and just watch the film. This could easily be solved by reading the poem in class. Michael Beson, a teacher in the ORRHS english department experimented with this tactic in his two junior classes. The idea worked as all the students followed along in their textbooks and after group discussion the students felt as though they had a grasp on the information.     Throughout the poem, many examples of pagan and Christian elements are shown. However, I do have one favorite Christian element that I came across when reading. One of the acts, “Further Celebration at Heorot,” Hrothgar remind Beowulf of the Greek lesson tragedians. He also tells him the one of Christian philosophy:”… that wealth, accumulated through the grace of God, must be shared unselfishly.” This is used to remind Beowulf of himself, and his pride. Throughout the story, at times he shows too much pride and forgets about God and just wants the treasures that come with the “victories.” Through the story Beowulf acknowledges God as his protector. When Beowulf compares his battle with Grendel's mother, he states that, "The fight would have ended straightaway if God had not guarded me.” He gives thanks to God, for allowing him to live. But, there is also a pagan element shown in this scene as well. For instance, back then the myths were capable of having superhuman powers to defeat others. In every scene with Beowulf almost, there was a sense of mystical protection on all of his actions. However, in every action Beowulf made, he needed God's protection and that was to be earned.     In the classic epic Beowulf we follow the great hero from his time as a young boy to his final moments as King of the Geats. During this many traits of various characters are revealed to us, none however as in depth as what is revealed about the titular figure of Beowulf. This is done through a jumble of Pagan and Christian values that are being bounced between throughout the text. Many of his ‘softer’ virtues such as forgiveness, generosity and commitment, seem to stem primarily from the Christian values whereas his ‘harsher’ virtues such as bravery, resourcefulness, and determination seem to stem more from the Pagan/ Germanic values. This conflict stems directly from the era in which this epic was written.
