The Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella Brevirostris), which are considered as the Mekong’s spirit, have developed a mutually beneficial relationship with fishermen in the Mekong Delta and the river’s branches in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. In spite of its important role to many provinces along the Mekong
Delta, its population is decreasing dramatically. In 2004, they have been listed as a Vulnerable Species in the IUCN Red List.
The threats to the Irrawaddy dolphin’s population:
1. Fishing activities
•. Accidental entanglement into gillnets and rubbish
•. Explosives and electric nets
•. Catching the dolphins for display purpose
Killing both dolphins and fishing stocks in the river.
