There are a lot of women and children who could seek help from my future agency and this knowledge could be useful for them. This study would also benefit my professional career as a social worker because the more educated I am about cases like these the more helpful I can be in helping my clients and anyone else who might be involved. My clients would also benefit from this because they might learn something that they didn’t know about domestic violence, or intimate partner violence. The two research questions I have developed for this proposal are, how many domestic violence offenders use a substance such as alcohol or drugs? And, how often are offenders under the influence when offending their spouse or intimate partner? There have been studies in that past that prove there is an association between domestic violence and substance (mainly alcohol) abuse. This association might be whether a domestic violence offender drinks alcohol, or the abused victim eventually turns to a substance after years of abuse to cope with the pain and stress of their daily lives. The amount of time exposed to domestic violence is a crucial factor in establishing casualty. There could be a case of domestic violence where a victim has only been around the person for one night, then again there could be a case of domestic violence where the victim and offender have been married for ten or more years.
