Domestic Violence Video Analysis

I searched for a piece of artwork that would connect to the emotional side of domestic violence, and the impact that it has on victims. Domestic violence is not only a physical act of violence, if there are not visible signs such as bruises, broken bone or cuts, the damage is still real. The physical, emotional and psychological effect of domestic abuse according to this article, is recognized on the “national level among all groups of women” (Buzawa, Buzawa, & Stark, 2012). The article addresses the perception society has of domestic violence victims. The ideology of victims being poor minority groups, and not the middle class and affluent whites Buzawa, Buzawa, & Stark (2012), makes society aware of domestic violence, also the fact that different groups can be impacted differently. The commonality domestic violence victims have is that they are ashamed, embarrassed, frightened or threatened from getting help.

Women who are abused suffer an enormous amount of pain emotionally and psychologically. I can see how they might go to the emergency room for temporary relief. I can’t imagine how vulnerable they feel holding so much inside and not telling somebody what is going on. The abuse will eventually take a toll on your health. When I think of the effect that violence would have on women’s mental health, I imagine over time all the isolation from family and friends, the control inflicted on them, the rage towards them that can bring them to the point of desperation.
