In Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’, Don John is a very important character. He is an illegitimate son, which automatically lowers him in the society of the Elizabethan age. He is isolated, ignored and rejected by everyone in his life, which is one of the reasons which seem to force him to behave as a villain. People expected this of him as they assumed that everyone born out of wedlock was probably an untrustworthy, malicious villain. Don John feels he must be a villain by acting in manipulative, sly and jealous ways, which portrays his lack of psychological development and lack of relationships with people. The relationship we mainly learn about in the play is between Don John and his brother, Don Pedro. Due to Don John being the illegitimate son it means he cannot inherit anything from his family nor have the same recognition as his brother, who is of legitimate birth. Even though Don Pedro doesn't outwardly treat Don John cruelly, Don John is very aware that he is seen as socially inferior to Don Pedro…

After arriving aboard the ship, Delano notices the peculiarity of Cereno and his relationships aboard his ship. Cereno’s relationship with Babo causes jealousy in Delano as he wishes to have such a “fraternal” relationship, even proclaiming that he “env[ies]” such a relationship (41,46). Delano witnesses the nature of Babo and Cereno’s connection and imagines himself in such a position as Cereno. This, in relation to Lacan’s mirror stage, is the recognition of “the desire of the other” which corresponds to Delano’s “natural maturation” (507). As Delano wishes to have the same relationship as Cereno, he recognizes that he is not the same but only similar to the other man. Whil he recognizes that he and Cereno are not the same, Delano refuses to believe that anything unnatural is happening aboard the San Dominick and so he agrees to remain clueless to the revolt within his subconscious. Cereno, as Delano’s reflection in the Lacanian sense, is giving clues to the problems aboard his ship through his “relentless and unintentional self-policing” as he attempts to help Delano decipher the mysteries that remain hidden on the San Dominick (Rebhorn 168). As Delano wishes for such a brotherly bond that Cereno has with Babo, Babo threatens Cereno with a knife to his neck under the guise of shaving him. Delano notes the “terrified aspect … presented by Don…

    Loyalty In Don Chipote

Here, the novel reveals the unequal friendship between Don Chipote and Pitacio by displaying Pitacio’s exploitment of his host’s generosity. For example, Don Chipote offers his friend hospitality along with food and shelter as a testament to his kindness. Instead of expressing appreciation for this gracious gesture, Pitacio takes advantage of the situation in order to benefit himself. The fact that he tells lies to his friend in order to receive food for the coming days makes matters worse since he intentionally misleads Don Chipote. This dishonesty damages the friendship between the two characters because one side is using the other person for personal gain. In this example, the text highlights the negative trait of dishonesty and manipulation that constitute a faulty and unequal friendship. In addition to the negative traits of dishonesty and manipulation, Pitacio exhibits unreliability in keeping his promises. One could argue that by Pitacio staying behind in Mexico to help Don Chipote’s family while Don Chipote is away, he exhibits good friend characteristics. However, the text undermines this opinion when it notes that “[g]ood buddy Pitacio was more than happy to do this—for the first few months” (Venegas 129). In this moment, the text…

The Shakespearean comedy, Much Ado about Nothing encompasses themes such as the importance of honour, the ideal of social grace, nevertheless uses a plot which primarily revolves around the theme of deception re occurring in various forms. On one hand deception is used throughout Much Ado About Nothing in a malicious manner, however on the on the hand it can be portrayed in a benevolent and beneficial manner such as the fooling of Beatrice and Benedick and deceiving them into proclaiming their love for each other. The use of both forms of deception often makes it difficult to distinguish between the two, such as when Claudio announces his desire to woo Hero, however Don Pedro takes it upon himself to woo her for Claudio. However Shakespeare’s use of deception is neither completely a means of malice nor a mean of showing traits of kindness between characters, the use of deception aids the development of the plot and creates a path for other elements necessary in the play such as its comical elements.…

In "Much Ado About Nothing" Shakespeare captures many of the social standards in Elizabethan society whether they are fair or not. In Act 2 Scene 2 of the play, Don John plots to frame Hero and make it look like she has been unfaithful to her fiancée the night before they are due to marry. This then sparks outrage from the male characters, which in turn shows a male bias in their society. The way Hero's father takes a mans word over hers shows how strong trust and respect was for men compared to that shown towards women.…

The personality of Don Pedro towards his goal is positive, while Don John’s personality towards a goal is distrustful. In the play, Much Ado about Nothing, Don Pedro says, “My love is thine to teach. Teach it but how, And thou shalt see how apt it is to learn And hard lesson that may do thee good” (Shakespeare Act 1, Scene I 228-230). He is saying that he’d do whatever Claudio asked him to, no matter how hard it is that he wants. In comparison with Don Pedro, Don John negative attitude shows when he says, “If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way. You are both sure, and will assist me?” (Shakespeare Act 1, Scene III 52-53). Don John is saying that he’ll be overjoyed by spoiling Claudio’s life with the help of Conrad and Borachio. Though both characters have a set goal, their different perspectives on things expresses their distinct personalities. Therefore, each character has a different attraction to other individuals.…

In the two scenes of ‘Much ado about nothing’, that I am going to go in more detail of, have two different opinions that the characters portray about marriage. There are four main characters who are the couples of the play, they are ‘Hero & Claudio’ and ‘Beatrice & Benedick’, both couples have opposite feelings towards marriage in scene one and may still think the same way about love and marriage in scene two but Shakespeare makes their characters portray it in different ways. Each scene gives the characters two identities, because in scene one Claudio and hero are made out to be the perfect, destined couple and in scene two their relationship is broken apart. Shakespeare portrays each couple in the two scenes to be imaged out as one character in the first scene, and then become complete opposite to their first character when it comes to the second scene. This play was set in the Elizabethan times, so women would want to marry well and only have a relationship with that one man that they would marry. The men at that period of time would have to have a high status to be married.…
