In the first process of the lab, you measure the mass of water transferred from a buret to a beaker, to determine the experimental mass of the water, and the volume of the water collected. We measured the temperature of the water so we could calculate the density of the water, which enabled us to calculate the actual volume of water, by using the density and the measured volume of water. To determine the percent error, we had to subtract the actual volume of water by the experimental volume of water transferred from the buret to the beaker, and then divided it by the actual volume and multiplied it by 100. In the second process, you perform the same steps you did for the buret, but instead, you use a 5.00mL or 10.00mL pipet. You repeated each…
Poetry is not something that I would normally be interested in. I’ve tried writing poetry only to end up a dismal failure. I’ve tried to read poetry only to end up bored halfway through. I’ve always wanted to be one of those soulful poetic types who walk around with a serene look on their faces, snapping their fingers when something tickles their fancy but I’ve never quite made that transition. Poetry, to me, seems to be a fanciful, ethereal pursuit that has somehow always gone over my head no matter how hard I’ve tried. Since I’ve failed miserably at being a poet or even enjoying poetry, you can imagine my surprise when I read “Dog’s Death” and not only enjoyed it but it touched my heart. A good poem knows how to grab not only the reader’s attention but will snag the reader’s emotions and take them on a roller coaster; whether it has a happy or a sad ending the poem should keep the reader’s interest until the end.…
Kenneth Slessor, a renowned poet and journalist was born on the 27th of March 1901 in Orange, New South Wales. Throughout his eventful life, Slessor was able to compose an array of poems through which he was able to convey his experiences through life. But why exactly are his poems still considered so relevant and significant in this era? Firstly, Slessor’s poems were widely recognised for their ability to accurately depict his understanding of humanity, life, death and change. Across his oeuvre he conveys a unique yet consistent view of the meaning of life and death. He presents this through the use of poetic techniques such as metaphors, repetition, similes and alliteration which are evident through all of his poems. Good morning/afternoon Mr Younes and Yr. 12.…
Hello. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Gene Forrester. I was Phineas’ roommate and best friend. We are here today to pay tribute to and celebrate Finny’s remarkable life. Truth be told, writing this speech was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. It wasn’t challenging because I knew too little about Finny to share, but because I knew too much. I knew Phineas better than anyone else; we were constant companions. We were two parts of one whole and the more I got to know Finny the more proud I became to be his friend. He was talented, virtuous, joyful, and so much more. It is a tragedy that a person as young and precious as Finny has been taken so soon. Finny affected us all in ways we can’t even imagine.…
The history of haunted houses goes back extremely far, in fact it goes back to the 1800s. This essay will be about haunted houses and their history. The history of haunted houses is displayed in the form of newspaper articles, essays and polls to show that people still love haunted houses due to many reasons.…
In today's modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like " Theme for English B" and "Let American be American Again."…
Donald Hall is considered one of the major American poets of his generation. His use of simple and direct language creates an imagery that’s raw and beautiful. His passion for nature reflects in his poems and creates a nostalgic tone to them. Hall’s poems are very personal and most of them describe life changing moments or experiences he has encountered. Through his word choice, stanzaic structure, and metaphor one can see how Hall’s poems describe things that everyone experiences which makes it very relatable.…
Ok what I have got here today is a detailed speech and I intend to explain two poems “Disabled” and “Dolce et Decorum est.”, both written by Wilfred Owen. I would choose these two poems to be in an anthology because I found the poems to be very dramatic and extremely detailed. Owen intends to shock us by demonstrating what a soldier might expect in a situation between life and death. He is not afraid to show his own feelings. Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poet and expresses his ideas and feelings through various themes and poetic devices which I will be discussing throughout this speech.…
Edgar Allan Poe is an ever famous poet and idol to many young inspiring authors. We learn about his works in school and come to appreciate his dark and cynical worldview. Although Poe is admired for his expertise in the horror and detective genres there is still one case that is yet to be solved; no one is sure how this beloved poet died. Experts have come up with two probabilities on the cause of his death. One explanation is that Poe had died of alcohol poisoning, as he did have a drinking problem in his early years.…
Texts are a product of their contexts. (How the same story can have a different meaning based on their context)…
Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both captivate the readers attention and can even keep them intrigued in a piece long after their first time reading it. A line such as one of the most memorable lines from Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (1). Many recognize this line and many may have their own opinions on how to look at his poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. Another poem with a shared theme is E.E. Cummings poem “Anyone lived in a pretty how town” these two poems are very different in delivery and literary devises, but both have a common theme, a theme of how time goes on and the choices one makes, shapes who they become. This reoccurring theme is important because live doesn’t stop going it is a clock that will never stop ticking and every time the clock ticks we make a choice that shapes who we are and who we will be in the future.…
Theodore Roethke’s poem “Elegy for Jane” shows the speakers affliction towards the death of his former student Jane. Roethke uses personification, imagery and metaphors as well as other devices to show the love and sorrow the speaker feels for Jane.…
In England Frost met many great poets, and had many influencers’. Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, and Robert Graves were just a couple names, but they had a huge impact on how he wrote. Continuing to write, Frost moved back to the states to Boston publishing many more great poems. Outliving a lot of people and family, Frost lived to be the age of eighty eight, dying on January 29, 1963. He was buried next to his wife and children, who will go down with the great name of Frost forever. Never forgotten, Frost’s poetry is still read today and used in many ways to help…
The Bridge, written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow sometime after the death of his wife during miscarriage in the year 1835, reflects on the heart-rending feeling of loss. The poem was written by Longfellow as not only a reflection of the tragic loss of his wife, but also as a reflection of the conflicting emotions felt by him pertaining to the loss. In his poem, Longfellow describes two of the foremost conflicting emotions as depression and acceptance. These emotions are the same emotions later described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying as the last two stages of the grieving process. Hence the purpose of Longfellow’s poem The Bridge is to express personal grief and reflect on the conflicting emotions one feels during many of the losses presented during life.…
“To the Memory of Mr. Oldham” is a touching elegy written by John Dryden. John Oldham died at the age of thirty and John Dryden, being fifty-two at the time of Oldham’s death, writes an elegy in tribute to the young poet’s achievements. However, what made John Dryden care enough to write twenty-five lines of heroic couplets, which is an unusual form for an elegy, in order to lament John Oldham’s untimely death?…
