Donald Schon's Model Of Reflective Practice
I have chosen to use Donald Schon’s (1983) model of reflective practice to reflect on my experience of leading the change in the school environment. I feel this was the most suitable model as it allowed me to reflect-on-action how I executed the task (Schon, 1983). I have been implementing a change in the primary school where I work. As a teaching assistant I feel confident in suggesting changes we could put in place, however, this project enabled me to enhance my development and initiate a change where I lead the staff members. The initial process of the project involved discussing the change with the head teacher and gaining her consent, which I felt apprehensive about as it was the first phase of my leadership role. The meeting represented the strong relationship between me and the head teacher. I believe I portrayed a confidence in the project as I presented my vision; the manager was able to see the quality of what the team and I could produce, which enabled her to feel confident in my ability in ensuring the task was completed to a high standard (Yaverbaum and Sherman, 2008). …show more content…
My approach to leadership was crucial in ensuring I could encourage the team to participate. I ensured that I listened, was self-confident and a team worker (Goleman, 2002), along with ensuring I was fair, consistent, had clear set goals and considered the culture of the team (Edgington cited in: Jones and Pound, 2008).     What is reflective practice? In short, it’s a practice that helps you become an active learner. Many of us, including myself, may be considered or interpreted as passive learners. Passive learning goes a bit like this: we read textbooks, we follow everything our instructor or teacher tells us (sometimes we tune out), we write exams and then…we forget what we learned.
