When I began my investigations, I looked around the borough of Queens to see whether any other neighborhoods were having similar problems to ours or other problems associated with their sewers. Through my efforts, I discovered something that will affect New York City in a major way:
“Donald Trump budget cuts will include environmental cuts largely. As reported by am NewYork, these proposed EPA cuts, which total $2.6 billion or 31 percent, include staff reductions and program eliminations, which may make the city’s drinking water and air quality vulnerable to pollution.” (Balkan 2015)
These budget cuts will have a tremendous impact on New York City, and, of course, that includes my neighborhood. For this reason, I believe we need to work together as a neighborhood.
I interviewed the storeowners on my block. One of them owns a pizzeria, the next one owns a Laundromat, and another one owns a supermarket. I asked these storeowners a few simple questions: What do you think of the neighborhood? Have you noticed how the dirty the sidewalks have gotten? What do you think we should do to help improve the neighborhood in which we …show more content…
He said that the sidewalk would always be dirty due to the people who stood in front of the pizzeria and threw garbage there. However, he added, “I mean, we do our part to make sure we are clearing the sidewalk on a daily basis.” The second storeowner, who owned the laundromat, said, “We do our part, but everybody needs to do their part so we can have a clean sidewalk, so we will have no issues.” The owner of the supermarket gave a similar response: “I make sure my part is always clean.” I then asked them whether they would be open to working together to keep the sidewalks clean. Clean sidewalks would ensure that the sewer was clean, and that would ensure that the water was clean. They all said they would. The reason why I asked the storeowners these questions was because I wanted to see if there was anything we could do. It occurred to me that we could start a group or something along those lines to make a difference in our community, and I hoped that people would look at it as a model for action in their own communities. I also resolved to try to get a group of storeowners to clean up the streets in front of their stores so as to prevent garbage from getting into the
