Politics nowadays can be polarizing to borderline ridiculous. Take for example the fact that reality star and businessman Donald Trump is running for the Republican Presidential nominee race. This week, he declared that the United States should ban Muslim immigration. The same day, the New York Times broke the story with the general article “Donald Trump Calls for Barring Muslims From Entering U.S.” from its First Draft section. The article states; “Donald J. Trump called on Monday for the United States to bar all Muslims from entering the country until the nation’s leaders can “figure out what is going on” after the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, Calif…..” This has led to much ridicule and hatred …show more content…
This is an example of one of the agents of socialization, self-identity. Self-identity is a person’s conscious experience of themselves as different from other individuals. Donald Trump often uses his own self-identity as a way to gain press. The author of the article states, “Mr. Trump has a track record of making surprising and even extreme comments whenever he is overtaken in opinion polls by other Republican candidates – as happened on Monday just hours before he issued his statement about Muslims.” By distancing himself from the other candidates, Trump makes himself more distinct and independent, which increases his appeal in some areas of the United States. The first one is that our sense of self is not simply based on who we believe we are. In his statement, Trump implies that he knows what he would do to protect national security, and he believes that he would be the best person for the job. That does not mean that he knows how exactly to do that. Trump, first and foremost, is always a businessman. He keeps saying it in his speeches, and even went to Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. He even ran for president in the 2000 election as a member of the Reform Party, but withdrew shortly afterwards due to a poor showing at a primary. Even with more of a business mind and a lack of a political one, Donald Trump still believes that he is the best option right now compared to the other, more experienced candidates. His sense of self is as both a businessman and politician, and he believes himself to now be more of a politician. However, sense of self is not based on who we believe we are, so Trump’s sense of self is more about his opinions and claims rather than his background. This is clearly shown with his recent
