Donny: Transformative And Autocratic Leadership
Donny’s characteristics are dominating, self-assured, committed, and he has the ability to inspire others to their full potential. These are all good traits to have for a leader because a leader’s personality and past experience influences their philosophy (Shani, Chandler, Coget & Lau, 2009). A leader’s philosophy can amount to a few words or as many as thousands of pages long, full of experiences and theories. Donny’s leadership style seems to be a combination of Transformative and Autocratic leadership with a lot of room for improvement. An Autocratic leader makes decisions without consulting their team members, even if their input would be useful (Lussier & Achua, 2015). This can be appropriate when you need to make decisions quickly, when
there's no need for team input, and when team agreement isn't necessary for a successful outcome. However, this style can be demoralizing, and it can lead to high levels of absenteeism and staff turnover. A Transformative leader inspires their team members because they expect the best from everyone. Donny pushed everyone that he mentored to do more than what they thought were their capabilities. He set clear goals for each member and this lead to high productivity and engagement (Caldwell, Dixon, Floyd, Chaudoin, Post, & Cheokas, 2012). Although, I must say Donny’s chosen method of motivation could use some improvement because he allowed his anger, frustration and anxiety to leak out when engaged in dialogues with his team members.
