America V.S. Italy America the home of the brave and the land of the free full of the worker and the Independent man who has the picture of him one day owning his own company. Now those are the two main type of men who live in this fine country but in Italy there are also two main type of men and these men are the Family man who was raised from the very begging to Marie a nice Italian girl and have lots of kids with her. This type of man finds a nice girl marries her and raises his kids just the way he was raised and ends in one big happy family. The other man is also raised to Marie and have kids but some where down the red brick road while walking down the country side he relies he is not ready to setal down and get married so he chooses to do what ever he wanted to do and bas-icily starts his own dream just like the American dream by finding his own way and doing what he wants. dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd- dddddddddddddddddeovanni Oldfield

    John Steinbeck’s novel of ‘Of Mice and Men’ and Sam Mendes’ ‘American Beauty’ each explore the American dream, an ideal of a happy and successful life to which all may aspire and achieve. Both texts place their own contextual perspective upon its ideals and the settings are the main distinguishing points between the texts, from the Californian Dust Bowl in the 1930s to the globalised commercial 21st century. ‘Of Mice and Men’ suggests that the American Dream is to attain private land ownership, so as to belong to something and to call it his own. Although this dream is unattainable, the novel also focuses on the celebration of friendship and that it is used as a coping mechanism against the harsh misanthropic world the characters are placed in. On the other hand, ‘American Beauty’ satirises the flaws of the American Dream through the depiction of dysfunctional families who have already achieved the dream. These families superficially chase material wealth yet they are presented as being anything but content.     Through a variety of literary and cinematic techniques respectively, John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men and Sean Penn’s Into The Wild illustrate how the fulfilment of one’s life, and their pursuit of happiness, hinge upon friendship, dreams, and one’s attitude towards life and happiness in general. Steinbeck’s 1937 novella Of Mice And Men illustrates the importance of friendship and dreams in a context of hardship and economic downturn.
