Doomsday:Is the Hype worth it? When most people think of the end of the world they imagine situations that would test an individuals resolve and ability to overcome catastrophic events such as a astroid or comet impact or aliens invading our planet to the dreaded " zombie apocalypse". Realistically there are events that could happen and being prepared or having a plan could save your life. How you do so will determine if you survive or perish.
Television networks have decided to cash in on this type of doomsday prepping. This kind of prepping causes mass hysteria in some circles of people. Networks like the Discovery channel with shows like, "The Colony" and "Doomsday Bunkers," have shown the good the bad and the ugly of a post apocalyptic world. The question is do shows like these have a point? Can they teach us something? Do they actually prepare us for what may or may not come in the future. It could also be that these shows are just for entertainment not intending to help us or teach us anything about our world in a post apocalyptic scenario. "What the series clearly demonstrated to me was a total lack of trust in government at all levels to protect and care for its citizens." (Mandeville) Mandeville is a ex army survival expert and a graduate phychologist who spent twenty three years in the army. Mandeville made this comment about the show Doomsday Preppers but the same basic concept applies.
The Discovery channel show "The Colony" puts a variety of people who have different occupations to see if humanity can survive in a post apocalyptic world. The Colony's purpose as a show is to inform or show its viewers how to survive as a group in a end of world as we know it type scenario. In this show the group of strangers are forced to live with each other in a warehouse and they must use their skills both from everyday life experiences and from their educational and job experiences to survive
