Tom reflects at the beginning of the chapter while his mom does the laundry. California looms in the distance a tempting eden. Yet… it could just be a scam. That doubt scares all of the family on some level. Talking more about prison, Tom says that the only way to stay sane is to take one day at a time.…

Because Dorothy’s last name is Gale, and there were obvious points in the storyline of the Wizard of Oz where characters seem to be “blown off course”, a reader can understand that her last name was a metaphor. In the story, Miss Gulch threatens to put Toto to sleep because Toto chased her cat. Because of this motive, Dorothy casts Miss Gulch as the Wicked Witch of the West. The metaphor is used in the movie to show that Miss Gulch had thrown Dorothy onto a different path in the odyssey.…
I think that the chief reasons for the mass migration to California where based on a few different reasons. The first reason was because everyone was poor. They didn't have enough money to have the most basic necessities in life. They would even go to such lengths as to steal a neighbors house. No body was happy living in Oklahoma. They all had such hard lives that no one had time to do what they wanted to do. It was farm from sun up to sun down. That is what everyone did, and they didn't even get that much compensation for all the devotion that they put into their work day, after day, after day. If I worked at something for twelve hours a day, and just made hardly enough money to keep living, I would get quite frustrated and not be very happy at all.…
Katherine Porter uses many things in nature in the different visions that Granny has to hide some of the meaning she put in the story. When she says “A fog rose over the valley, she saw it marching across the creek swallowing the trees and moving up the hill like an army of ghosts” there are many things in there that make the sentence have a whole different meaning. Like I stated earlier fog means that you can’t see clearly and the valley means there is a change going on through your life. So she can’t see clearly as she is going through these changes in her life. The creek symbolizes her life and the trees represent strength and wisdom but as the fog moves across it her life and wisdom is burled.…
The reader’s first encounter with a female character is ‘The woman in Weed.’ She is presented as a liar and exaggerator due to her reaction when Lennie tugged her dress. George and Lennie are forced to flee from Weed, in order to escape the newly formed mob chasing them. This forces the reader to perceive women in a diminishing way at the start, which influences the reader’s perception on women overall, throughout the novel.…
In the novel, Leah is the second oldest of the Price daughters, she is 14-years-old along with her twin sister, Adah. Leah is one of the more unique characters. Leah is very intelligent, kind-hearted, and understanding. She’s also the only tomboy of all the sisters. Leah is also a “daddy’s girl”. In so many words, she worships her father. “He stood his ground, my father, tall as Goliath and pure of heart as David.” (pg. 48) She’s very attached to her father. “I know he must find me tiresome, yet still I like spending time with my father very much more than I like doing anything else.” (pg. 43) While Leah’s other siblings and even her own mother don’t like the fact that they have to move to Africa for, Leah embraces the move and totally supports her…

“Jesus Christ, one person with their mind made up can shove a lot of folks aroun'! You win, Ma.” This quote originates from Tom Joad after Ma had revolted against the family when they suggested the idea of splitting up. Ma stubbornly picked up a jack handle and waved it at the Joad family, including the normal head of the family, Pa. Ma's outbreak was astonishing to the Joads and marked the beginning of her fierce leadership of the family and the degradation of Pa's role as the head man. Throughout the tale of the Joads' migration to California, Ma had begun as a timid woman without having much say in the family decisions, but steadily took…
A warrant for Martha Corey was worn out the same day and the constable took one of the few level-headed people left in Salem away in chains. Joining Martha Corey shortly afterwards was Dorothy Good, who had been seen by the girls flying around the countryside on her “Pole,” and who was sneaking into their bedrooms at night and biting them. A cunning witch, Dorothy Good must have been, and apparently wise beyond her years.…
Family is defined as “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not” (Dictionary.com). The idea of families acting as a unit is explored in the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The novel is focused on a family from Oklahoma, the Joads, as they journey to the West because they are driven off their land. The Joads are tested as a basic social unit as they encounter the difficulty of loss, new people, the search for work, and much more. Steinbeck explains many points about family throughout the novel, including the idea of loyalty. In The Grapes of Wrath, loyalty to the family is demonstrated by Ma and Tom Joad??? and can easily relate to modern families.…
There is something mysterious about the reason why people feel the need to look out for one another. In some cases, it is like humans feel a certain obligation of compassion. The Grapes of Wrath encourages this part of human nature. During the Joad’s westbound journey, the characters were held face to face with people who needed help just as much as they did. In this way, John Steinback presents the question: how can we as humans support the livelihood of one another? His answer is that humans must support each other’s livelihood by providing what others are deprived of.…
