1. What surprised you in the book and why?
A. Something that surprised me in the book is that Carley’s mom was actually trying to protect Carley from Dennis. She actually wanted Carley back so she could start a new life in Vegas. Her mom thought at first that she had to be loyal to Dennis and listen to him. She helped Dennis by grabbing Carley and holding her down so Dennis could beat her. In the end she realizes that Carley is more important than Dennis and she lets go of Carley. They both went to the hospital. After Carley’s mom gets better she requests Carley to visit her. Carley’s mother apologizes and asks Carley to move back to Las Vegas with her. They move but Carley is sad that she will never see the Murphys again.

I admire Mrs. Murphy because she is kind and loving. She helped Carley and made her feel welcome when no one else would. Another character I admire is Carley because even when her life got hard she never gave up. She was determined that her life would be good again. She was grateful for the Murphys and helped Mrs. Murphy out with whatever needed to be done at the house. Toni because she was a good friend. Toni was very kind to Carley when Carley had no other friends or people to stand up for her. Toni defended Carley when Rainer was picking on her. I dislike Dennis because he hurt Carley and her mother and they both ended up in the hospital. I do not like that he made Carley feel powerless. Carley felt like she had to be careful and cautious around her stepfather. Another character I dislike is Rainer. He constantly teased Carley and had no idea what she was experiencing out of
