Double Standards Research Paper
Double standards are rules and expectations set in place to shame or pass judgment on the opposite sex for engaging in similar activities. Why do double standards exits between men and women? From my understanding, double standards are into place by society typically because men and women are held to distinct expectations. For instance, if a man were to be promiscuous, it is to be expected because they are makes and “boys will be boys”, whereas a woman being promiscuous is made to feel embarrassed due to her sexual exploits. Society continuously uplifts and encourage certain behavior in men and prosecutes the women who duplicate that behavior.
Moreover, double standards affect the way that both women and men are perceived by the public, wage

Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it? Is it that of people talking on their cell phone while in the checkout line in a grocery store? Or, drivers not using their blinkers while changing lanes? Well, one of my biggest pet peeves is double standards or hypocrites. It really bothers me when people say one thing and with their actions do the exact opposite. In the book King Leopold’s Ghost, there are three characters that display the most hypocrisy, King Leopold, Henry Morton Stanley and Colonel George Washington Williams.…

“It’s invisible to us, but there is a crime wave going on, unprecedented in human history”. This is the opening line to “Counterfeit Culture,” a documentary about how counterfeit items enter the market, the kinds of goods normally purchased, and how it not only affects the global economy, but our own personal lives as well. In the last twenty years, counterfeit goods have exploded. This is because the way consumers do business has changed. Globalization has become a major influence on all markets and goods can now easily flow from one country to another, real and counterfeit.…

In a normal functioning society, people are expected to behave and respect social norms. A norm is a set of informal understandings which regulate the behavior of members of a society (Norms). Norms are accepted by groups of members in a society. Folkways are norms that are experienced by all members of society in our daily lives. If a folkway is broken or, society does not make a significant outcome of it. It is still noticed by members. For Example, People wait in lines to purchase goods in every store. If a person were to skip in front of people in the line, the group that is the line will see that as a breaking of a folkway. Someone may speak up and make the person go the back of the line, or people might not say anything. Regardless, skipping the line will be observed by the members of the society.…

Although gender discrimination is hidden with the other social norms, it is present and has a great impact on the daily lives of both men and women. Sexism has a similar effect on society like bacteria; while it may be beneficial for some, it can be harmful to others. This concept is what creates the significant gap between genders, while giving the impression that one gender, generally the male, is superior to the other. Sexism has made its way into a part of daily life; it is simply inevitable for the general population to follow the typical roles, established since the beginnings of the development of humanity. The basic foundations of the roles of men and women are heavily influenced by sexism; therefore, gender discrimination is clearly…

The intention of this essay is to discuss and assess the morality of cheating when one is in a serious relationship. I will be referencing case number 22, which deals with the ethics of cheating in a relationship. My opinion on the matter is that it is morally unacceptable for an individual involved in a serious relationship to cheat. To defend this position that I have taken, I will address the individual rights of both members of the relationship, make use of analogies and consider objections from the opposing view. While some relationships are not victims of the cheating plague, it is a rising concern for many couples as it appears that the temptations, opportunities and avenues to cheat are very present in today's society.…

Many man are glorified by what they do in the world today as to women everything they do is perceived to be negative (Ridgeway & Bourg, 2004). For example, people’s sexuality in societies characteristics play many roles like if males have sex with many girls they are the man, but if females have sex with a lot of males then they are whores or sluts. In this world today females should just go ahead and say this is a man’s world because no matter how much women strive for greatness it is always put down in a negative way.…

For example, it is considered as a women profession being maids, secretaries, nurses or teachers meanwhile, it is considered as man profession being managers, lawyers, engineers or professors. This creates the idea that women are not able to do a “man job”, we talk specifically about women due to it is where we mostly see the occupational segregation. Even though, the rate of women taking “man” jobs has increased, there exists another problem: the pay gap between men and women. As we talk before, socialization plays a key factor in this issue. Usually women are paid less for the same job that men do because of their gender. As a patriarchal society, women are considered less important than men, even if they have the same educative level as men. After 1980, the wage rate between men and women started to equalize; however, in the 2000’s women are still earning just 76% of what man do. Why have women been paying less than men when they have the same abilities? Some of the reasons are “the idea that women should be modest while men should promote themselves, women may negotiate less strongly for pay”, “women are concentrated in lower-paying occupations”, “employers often do this out of a biased perception that whatever is done by women must be easier and not as important or the company” (The Sociology Project 2.0), even if there exist some laws that protect women against…

This is called sexual double standard, that is, the acceptance of different criteria to assess the sexuality of men and women. A recent study conducted with Brazilian adolescents showed, for instance, that peers and parents still condemn women who actively express their sexuality and men who do not do it. In 1956, Ira Reiss began a series of publications about the double standard in premarital sexual intercourse.…
