of The Party and because it is introduced so early in the novel, this slogan serves as the reader’s first introduction to the idea of doublethink. By weakening the independence and strength of people’s minds and forcing them to live in a constant state of propaganda-induced fear, The Party is able to force its subjects to accept anything it decrees, even if it is entirely illogical. This slogan is also equally contradictory and serves as an important testament to the power of The Party’s mass campaign of psychological control. In theory, The Party is able to maintain that “War Is Peace” because having a common enemy keeps the people of Oceania united. “Freedom Is Slavery” because, according to The Party, the man who is independent is doomed to fail and “Ignorance Is Strength” because the inability of the people to recognize these contradictions cements the power of the authoritarian regime. This novel was also written as a warning directed towards the loss of freedom due to total government control as
Orwell is famous for his “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY” statement when he warned society about the future of the western world. Freedom itself is under attack, Bush said, and he's right. Americans are about to lose many of their most cherished liberties in a frenzy of paranoid legislation. The government proposes to tap our phones, read our email and seize our credit card records without court order (Jacob November 2016).
This quote clearly explains that doublethink has caused the paranoia of no privacy.
The government in Oceania can see everything and anything you do. People simply cannot do anything to stop it or they will face severe charges or even death. Citizens do not have the choice to think freely or do anything freely because they will always be under question and watch. There is no such thing as true freedom because if people could do anything they wanted people would die and it would cause total anarchy. However, the choice of more freedom removes the paranoia of always being watched in case you slip up and being punished. The idea of doublethink also plays a vital role in the novel as the constant contradictory ideas running through citizen’s minds keep them confused and unable to rationalize ideas. The foundation of how Oceania runs is based on doublethink as “The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with War; the Ministry of Truth with Lies; the Ministry of Love with Torture; and the Ministry of Plenty with Starvation” (Williams November 2016). The ministries' names are ironic antonyms of the true nature of their actions. The Ministry of Peace very ironically and through doublethink logic conducts Oceania's perpetual war. The Ministry of Plenty is responsible for rationing, controlling and producing all food and goods. They have also declared false claims stating that they have increased the standard of living every time by a considerable amount. The Ministry of Truth concerns itself with using propaganda to arm Oceania's regime, controlling information: news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts. While The Ministry of Love is the agency responsible for the identification, monitoring, arrest and torture of dissidents, real or imagined. The ministries' names are clear examples of doublethink and it keeps citizens blinded by their true actions. In summary, doublethink has played a major role in the psychological manipulation of citizens because it weakens the
psychological independence and strength of individual’s minds all in order to benefit The Party’s regime.
