A Calgary couple, Alvin and Kathryn Liknes, disappeared from their home on the 29th of June, 2014, along with their grandson, Nathan O’Brien, after Nathan’s parents dropped him off for an impromptu sleepover.
The next morning, after Nathan’s mother called the house and didn’t receive an answer, she went to the home; upon entering, O’Brien found blood in several rooms and called the police.
An amber alert was immediately issued for Nathan, and his grandparents were also declared missing.
Police, after searching the area, announced a ‘violent incident’ had occurred in the home. Calgary police staff Sgt. Doug Andrus says: “Based on the evidence at the scene, somebody would be in medical distress.” …show more content…
The truck had been driving around the area several times on the 29th of June. They asked the driver to come forward in case they may be an assist in the case. On July 6th, 2014, the police received a note from Patti Garland, saying it was her brother’s truck; it was discovered that her brother had a long lasting grudge against Alvin Liknes, who was the father of her husband, Allen Liknes.
Douglas Garland, Patti’s brother, who neighbours say live in rural residence, was taken into custody for questioning.
On July 7th, 2014, Garland was arrested on the case of identity theft, however still remained as a person of interest on the missing person case.
After searching for two weeks on the farm in which Garland lived with his parents, police had yet to find evidence of the missing persons.
However, after expanding their search on the farm, they found items in Garland’s basement which indicated he was related to the case.
They found items such as:
