Psych-educational assessments for children with Down syndrome are to predominately find the child’s strengths and weaknesses. They then compare those symptomologies to other similar conditions or disorders. The categories would include traits such as language development, verbal memory, motor development, visual spatial processing, social and behavioral development, hearing loss, reading acquisition, etc. When designing individualized interventions for children with Down syndrome one should focus on behavior phenotypes. Also, the interventions should be performed early rather than later. Delays in the onset of treatment result in poorer development in motor, language, and social skills.…

My observation of both my children was very interesting and educational. I would have never expected my daughter to give me the same response as my son, taking into consideration their ages. Especially being that Dr. Rozankski, head of the Gifted program in MISD just informed me my son had an IQ score of 136 and scored in the 82nd percentile on the California Achievement Test. My daughter could tell me that there was 7 pennies in both rows but, my son could see beyond that and express what someone else may think given the lay out of the pennies or the way the question was asked. According to Piaget, both my children were in or have been in the concrete operational stage. I do not really know if I agree fully…

These children get a sense of entitlement from expecting adults to listen to them. They are more inclined to interrupt their parents, which can lead to them interrupting teachers and being the cause of class disruptions. They are confident in their own opinion and may cast aside the thoughts of others, thus appearing overbearing and bossy. They are taught that it is okay at times to debate with their parents on a rule or punishment, which can cause negative side effects for them should they attempt to debate with a teacher in school. Children do not always know best, despite what some children under the Concerted Cultivation method may think, and their self-assurance as such a young age can come across as rude or arrogant. Children who insist on a different method of schooling for themselves could potentially earn a bad reputation among teachers for being whiney or ungrateful, and they could be harmed by teacher…

“All across the country, educational programs intended for school-aged children are being appropriated for the education of young children (Elkind, 1988, p. 3). The miseducation of children is teaching children skills that are inappropriate for them according to their development level and the skills they possess. It is pushing a child to do too much too soon and often times has nothing to do with the child’s benefit, but rather the parents goals set forth for their children. Miseducating a child can have both short and long-term negative effects on the child’s growth and development.…
