Downey's Soup
Downey’s Soup Downey’s is an Irish tavern in Philadelphia created over 20 years ago by Jack Downey. Over the years, the fortunes of the restaurant have wavered, but the strength of some favorite menu items has helped it survive economic downturns. In particular, the lobster bisque soup has become increasingly popularity, but Downey’s efforts to market it have been sporadic. Never did Downey imagine that his lobster bisque would someday be the cause of an international trade dispute. Unbeknown to Downey, the Japanese have a strong penchant for lobster. When the Philadelphia office of the Japanese External Trade Organization (Jetro) asked Downey to serve his lobster bisque at a minitrade show in 1991, he began to think about mass production of his soups. The Japanese loved the lobster bisque. They gave Downey a strong impression that the soup would sell very well in Japan. At the time, Downey did not have a formal product line but that seemed to be only a minor obstacle. After the trade show, Michael Fisher, executive vice president for the newly formed Downey Foods Inc., was sent on an all-expenses-paid 10-day marketing trip to Japan by Jetro. (Jetro sponsors approximately 60 Americans for similar trips each year.) Although the interest expressed by the food brokers and buyers he met seemed to be more polite than enthusiastic, he did get an initial order for 1,000 cases of the lobster bisque. The only condition placed by the buyer was to reduce the salt content to comply with local Japanese tastes. Both Jetro and Fisher considered this initial order the beginning of rich export relationship with Japan. Fisher contracted a food processor in Virginia, adapted the recipe for the new salt content, and shipped the soup to Japan in short order. Visions of expanded sales in Japan were quickly dashed as the cases of soup were detained at customs. Samples were sent to a government laboratory and eventually denied entry for containing polysorbate, an emulsifying and

Neptune Gourmet Seafood is North America’s third largest seafood producer playing in a market where seafood is considered high-end. They have generated nearly a third of its revenue from selling frozen and processed fish through US grocery chains and organic food retailers. An even bigger market is through the many restaurants within 250 miles of Fort Lauderdale that they sell to; along with many big cruise lines. The final third of their market was through wholesalers who then sold the fish to restaurants across the country. Neptune was considered top quality, and therefore demanded a 30% premium over the majority of its competitors. They…

We all have our own favorite foods, Spaghetti, Ravioli, Cannoli's, Baguettes, even French bread; however, my own personal favorite food is soup. More specifically, my favorite soup is a Guatemalan Style Fideo Soup. The reason why I say soup can be considered a narcotic is because of the happiness it brings. By definition, a narcotic is a drug or other substance-affecting mood or behavior and sold for nonmedical purposes. In the definition where it says, "other substance," I believe that can be considered soup. Soup brings tons of happiness and jubilation; hence, the part of the definition where it says, "...affecting mood or behavior..." Soup also is sold for non-medical purposes. It can be sold because you're hungry, because you're in a bad…

She shows an example of a non-nuclear family at a soccer game cheering on a member of the family that has just scored a winning goal and she states, “I dare anybody to call this a broken home”, (Kingsolver 207). Brannigan Foods soup division happens to be one of the most profitable and successful divisions of the company. An overall analysis of the company through a BCG matrix shows that their soup division is their cash cow. This is where they make the vast majority (40%) of their sales. Because of this, it is very important to them to keep sales in profits as high as possible for as long as possible. An industry such as the canned soup and RTE (Ready to Eat) soup industry sees very little, if any, innovation in it. Because there is little relative R&D, it is important for companies in this kind of industry to milk their cash cow for as much as possible and as long as they can. It is also important to note that their RTE product category accounts for 71% of total revenues with other divisions such as: dry soups, healthier soups, and fast & simple meals.…

A major challenge of doing business internationally is to adapt effectively to different cultures. Several fast food companies have shown the willingness to adapt to local customs. Some examples of how international fast food chains have attempted to accommodate local tastes include: the Teriyaki McBurger at a McDonald’s in Japan, consisting of a sausage patty in a bun with teriyaki sauce; a curry potato pie and a red bean ice cream sundae in Hong Kong; a broiled salmon sandwich at a Burger King in Chile; even a pizza from Pizza Hut was “delivered” to the International Space Station in 2001, a collaboration between the company and Russian scientists. But no matter where fast food restaurants are located or what type of food they sell, their most fundamental operating principle is standardization. This means selling the exact same food everywhere, limiting the number of food choices. For some people, it is…
