Cotton to the point he wrote a book on his treatments and the development that went into it. The Defective Delinquent and Insane shows the technical data that came along with Henry Cotton’s treatments. Pictures/illustrations are shown of one of his infamous treatments that dealt with the extractions of multiple teeth due to his theory of how decaying teeth could lead to mental disorders or the start to it. The book backs up Cotton’s theory on how the “demons” of individuals could be treated. Cotton puts multiple charts of how the treatments ended up working on the patients which have been debunked to be inaccurate in further decades. This detail book gives a better outlook on Cotton’s treatments plus the broad views of his on mental illness. With more doctors knowing, it lead to the doors of mental health care creak open for adequate treatment for these people rather than locking them behind bars. It gave hope to the clueless families who pleaded for help. Cotton also made society aware of how mental illness was caused that gave a better outlook into how people perceived it. Even with Cotton’s morib, twisted treatments, they came with a positive outcome. This “breakthrough” sought to inform psychiatrist that mental illness was not caused due to infected organs in the body or decaying teeth.
