The yin yang is present throughout the story. The yin is the passive, negative force, and yang the active, positive force. It represents that humans cannot live without good or bad in their lives and we cannot function without the other. Dr. Jekyll goes on to say “ Man is not truly one but, truly two. (Chapter 10).” Hyde is pure evil, but Jekyll is a combination of both good and evil. The story is all about balance and one side can always take over the other without knowing.
