In nowadays, drugs become more and more familiar to people. In fact, drugs actually are good to human beings. They can be used to help and lessen pain. However, drugs abuse has become an important social problem.
According to the textbook, there are so many drugs in the United States, such as marijuana, cocaine, nicotine, heroin, alcohol, and so forth. According to a survey, more than 12.8 million Americans, about six percent of the household population age twelve and older, use illegal drugs on a current basis (America's Drug Abuse Profile). Among these drugs, marijuana is the most commonly used in the United States (Drugs of Abuse). To some extent, marijuana is really harmful to health. It causes a peaceful or euphoric sensation in the user. After this sensation disappears, users will feel very sleepy and very depressed. Another most popular drug is Heroin, which is one kind of drugs derived from the poppy plant that has no medical use.
Studies such as the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, formally called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, indicate that some children abuse drugs at age 12 or 13, which likely means that some begin even earlier (National Survey on Drug Use and Health). If drug abuse persists into later adolescence, abusers typically become more heavily involved with marijuana and then advance to other drugs, while continuing their abuse of tobacco and alcohol. Studies have also shown that abuse of drugs in late childhood and early adolescence is associated with greater drug involvement. It is important to note that most youth, however, do not progress to abusing other drugs.
