What type of book is Dragonwings? Who is dragonwings by? Why did the author write this book? What are some of the main characters and their characteristics? What’s the setting of the story? In this essay, all those questions will be answered followed by a lot more. First of all, Dragonwings is a historical fiction. Laurence Yep wrote this award-winning book. He was born in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1948. His mom is from Ohio and his dad is an immigrant from China. He started writing when he was 17 years old. Laurence went to college at Marquette University, he studied Journalism during college. His dad inspired him to become a writer because he was an immigrant from China and taught Laurence Chinese/American culture. Laurence also taught writing at Cal Berkeley and The University of Santa Cruz. …show more content…
His father runs a laundromat with other people known as the Company. Moonshadow and Windrider’s neighbor is Mrs.Whitlaw who is a superior women and cares for everyone. There was a huge earthquake and it really showed people’s true colors, but Mrs.Whitlaw did an amazing job with helping everyone out and joining people together to help. Blackdog stole Windriders money, but karma got him and he was found dead. His father’s dream has always been to fly. His Company, Moonshadow and him create a airplane. When he tries out the airplane, it goes smoothly until he crashes and breaks a few bones. The author's purpose in this book was to teach us that family is always there and more important than

    After the two family become familiar with each other the Whitlaws try to teach Moon Shadow more English, the best they could. Moon Shadow then taught them about dragons in the Tang people culture, but mainly about Windriders dream, to fly. Miss Whitlaw then feels that she wants to help accomplish Windriders dream, so she writes a letter to the Wright brothers. When the Wright brothers respond back, he becomes furious to what he has done. The next day he becomes happy again and decides to write back. As they send letters back and forth, the bigger Windrider starts to build his glider models. With one of his glider models, he takes it with them to a picnic with the Whitlaws and lets everyone fly it.
