PRE-LAB QUESTIONS

1. Define shut off head.
Shut-off head is a condition, when a centrifugal pump runs with discharge valve closed.
When a serviced pump is to be tested for its performance, we are running pump with different discharge condition to ensure that the pump is capable of performing as designed.
Shut-off head is the maximum head generated by a centrifugal pump with zero flow and relatively less power. Because it has to overcome very small head[upto discharge valve],less frictional losses and inertia loads. So, shut off head is a part of the charactoristic curves.
Caution: Dont run the centrifugal pump for a prolonged period in shut-off condition ,or else the liquid will get vaporise and pump will run dry and damaged the important part of the pumps like mechanical seal/gland packings, bearing ,etc.

Pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps.
Pumps operate by some mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary), and consume energy to perform mechanical work by moving the fluid. Pumps operate via many energy sources, including manual operation, electricity, engines, or wind power, come in many sizes, from microscopic for use in medical applications to large industrial pumps.
Mechanical pumps serve in a wide range of applications such as pumping water from wells, aquarium filtering, pond filtering and aeration, in the car industry for water-cooling and fuel injection, in the energy industry for pumping oil and natural gas or for operating cooling towers. In the medical industry, pumps are used for biochemical processes in developing and manufacturing medicine, and as artificial replacements for body parts, in particular the artificial heart and penile prosthesis.

Centrifugal pump is one of the most familiar kinetic pumps. A centrifugal pump converts the input power to kinetic energy in the liquid by accelerating the liquid by a revolving device - an impeller. The most common type is the volute pump. Fluid enters the pump through the eye of the impeller which rotates at high speed. The fluid is accelerated radically outward from the pump chasing. A vacuum is created at the impellers eye that continuously draws more fluid into the pump. The energy created by the pump is kinetic energy according the Bernoulli Equation. The energy transferred to the liquid corresponds to the velocity at the edge or vane tip of the impeller. The faster the impeller revolves or the bigger the impeller is, the higher will the velocity of the liquid energy transferred to the liquid be. This is described by the Affinity Laws.…

A strong cool breeze pushed its way through the tall, dark, green pine trees that danced as they swayed back and forth in the bright daylight. The snow caped rugged mountains, seemed to reach the sky. The wild caribou roamed freely as they searched for leaves and mushrooms along the soft green grass. The polar bears slowly, and carefully searched for seal in the icy cold waters. Two grizzly bears, a mama bear and the other the baby bear, wandered about and stopped in front of a large oil pipe that went on for miles. The moma grizzly bear used her back legs and was able to jump up and over the oil pipe by herself. The baby grizzly bear kept on trying to jump over to reach its moma, but he couldn't jump over so he was left behind, alone, and…

Future candidates are only required to fulfill minor requirements like citizenship, the ability to read and write, number of years in terms residency, a specific age and being a registered voter. Congressmen are voted per district, while senators are elected at large and are ranked by the number of votes. Candidates who got the highest number of votes are granted slots and become representatives for the Filipino people. They have other duties like deciding in international treaties; being a check and balance for the other two branches of the government and other things that are stated in the constitution. There are certain limitations to their power like having term limits, but they also have certain specific benefits like having the freedom from arrest when congress is in session. These are the things that are observable and can be considered as fair when we try to assess the gravity of the responsibility that they have and the position that is granted to them by their constituents.…
