ABSTRACT
The transition to university is a period of change and stress for young people, and although most students show favourable adjustment, some experience difficulties during their first year. A number of studies have shown that the alcohol consumption of first year students increases, both in terms of time spent drinking and the amount of alcohol consumed. The present study investigated the role of personality in this trend. Specifically, it investigated the relationship of the ‘big five’ personality attributes to drinking behaviour in first year students within the first month of entering university. Participants were told about the nature and aims of the study and that an individual could choose not to complete the questionnaire if he or she chose not to. They were assured that the study was anonymous, that names or identities should not be recorded on the questionnaires, and that it would not be possible to identify individuals after the data had been extracted for analysis. Each student who agreed to participate received a copy of the questionnaire in class. They were asked to complete Section A (the personality questionnaire) in private at the beginning of the week and the alcohol consumption diary, again in private, at the end of every day.
