In the history of hockey Gordie Howe was not only one of the greatest players to ever hit the ice he was literally a game changer. On and off the ice it was easy to tell from his early playing days in the USHL that Gordie was special. Gordie Howe possessed skills never seen by any hockey player before and rarely seen since. Howe would very quickly evolve, later being signed by the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings in 1946. Over the next 33 years Gordie Howe was in the game of pro hockey (NHL or WHA). He set numerous records over the years such as most goals ever scored in NHL history at 801 (since surpassed by Wayne Gretzky) and most NHL games ever played. Gordie Howe’s impact on the games will be remembered forever. For being able to change the way hockey was played Gordie Howe was able to evolve and shape the game of hockey over the 33 years in which he played is how Gordie Howe has contributed to the shaping of Canada’s identity.…

Baz Luhrmann resurrected the dying story of “The Great Gatsby” from the 1920’s by modernizing it to appeal to today’s audiences. People almost 100 years ago had greatly varying morals and lives compared to those of today, which Luhrmann realized and took that as a chance to tweak the storyline to grasp the attention of newer viewers. Anyone who has read the novel can instantly tell how different it is from the movie. Nonetheless, Luhrmann’s style and idea to take on the story from a new angle is fascinating and indubitably caught the attention of the nation when it came into theatres.…

    How I Learned to Drive

How I Learned to Drive was written by Paula Vogel. It is written in an autobiographical style, although it is never truly clear whether or not it is autobiographical in actuality. The story is about a woman (Lil’ Bit) in her 30’s looking back on her experience of being molested by an uncle (Uncle Peck) from the age of 11 through 18. The brilliance in Vogel’s writing is that despite the subject matter, Uncle Peck doesn’t come across as a “monster-like” figure. Instead he seems like a regular person—flawed but somewhat likeable.…

    Junk Drawer

Thesis: In this drawer lies both the past, and a prediction of the future. In this drawer memories are kept, and occasionally discarded. My junk drawer is a reflection of myself; the good, bad and the ugly. Scraps of my thoughts and possessions litter this strangely personal place, all too often bringing smiles and cringes to surface. Memories sometimes bought with the spare change in your pocket bring the most happiness. This drawer is not an obvious keeper of treasures, yet holds some of the most cherishable memories in life inside.…

In the film Drive directed by Nicolas Winding Refn a sudden act of violence by protagonist, Driver, is an interesting surprise. The build-up, kiss, bashing and exit involved in the scene of the incident help us to understand the character of Driver. The visual and oral features of camera shots, dialogue and lighting are used to create a surrealist incident.…

    Lord of the Files

An extract from the title Lord of the Flies was amidst the scene where the boys are hunting a sow. While on the literal sense the perception of this extract seems to be just killing a sow, this extended metaphor highlights the boys transformation into savagery, how its demonstrated is through use of imagery. At this point in the novel, the boys have been castaways for an extensive period of time now and with no adults and no females, their loss of social order leading to anarchy among the group, all propelling their desire for self-gratification which is stirring up inside of them. The boys discover a form of pleasure through hunting, showing in killing of the sow that the images used represent the hedonistic act of pleasure seeking behaviour, where the hunt is portrayed to represent fulfillment of sexual desires, suggesting the act of rape. The imagery conveyed in this extract operates through use of emotive language and dark adjectives to detail the boys brutal and savage behaviour to emphasise the loss or order, how being absent for organized society presents new means in obtaining pleasure and self gratification, highlighting the change to barbaric and brutalism.…

A Tale of Two Cities is "a dark one, filled with images of horror and destruction, of dirt and disease, of imprisonment and violent death." Critic Peter Ackroyd believes that A Tale of Two Cities is a dark book that is filled with shadows everywhere, only gets is small illumination in the depths of the French Revolution. He believes that there are many ways in which the book shows the “bright light” in the French Revolution and its dark shadows. One is by Doctor Manette’s life, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known."…

    The Time Machine

Let me start off this essay by saying that I believe H.G.(Herbert George) Wells is one of the most intelligent writers of his time: a true futurist. Obviously, I read The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and I would like to say that it was extremely well written and sounds as though it was written fairly recently. It may just sound this way because the human race has not really tried Time Traveling. The theme of The Time Traveler is, as I see it: Think about what you are doing before doing it. The Time Traveler should have thought his journey through and taken precautions for everything that could possibly go wrong, or right for that matter. If he had done this, I am sure he would have had a camera, matches (to fight off the Morlocks), cigars (he constantly longs for them throughout the novel) and of course, his machine would not have been captured by the Morlocks.

The main characters in The Time Machine were The Time Traveler, Weena (an Eloi who The Time Traveler rescued), the Eloi as a race and the Morlocks as a race. Now that you know the main characters, I will explain their purpose in the novel and their behaviors. Weena was by far the most interesting character in the novel. She was an Eloi who was drowning while trying to bathe in a river. The Time Traveler quickly jumped into the river and rescued her. Weena then started following The Time Traveler everywhere during his explorations. He learned about the Eloi people and their language and the Morlocks from Weena. The Time Traveler was definitely intelligent. He figured out a way to travel through time! He was also a very charming, rich and friendly man, a little too anxious and curious, I would say. His anxiousness made him go to another time unprepared, nothing with him but a package of matches. The Morlocks are a futuristic equivalent to our current day primates-just uglier, smellier and they live underground. They are very aggressive and are blinded by even weak sources of light. The Morlocks are…
