The driving age for adolescents should stay at 16 rather than being changed to a higher age because high schoolers need the ability to drive after school and the age doesn’t result in fatalities, its experience. Furthermore, graduated driving licenses creates a step by step guide to create problem solving and decision making while in tense situations and continues to drop fatality rates in states.
Roughly 80% of high school students work at part time jobs and if the driving age is changed to 18, who gets them to and from there occupation? The reason that the driving age shouldn’t be changed is that teens need the ability to drive from school to after school activities such as sports or jobs. The Graduated Licenses have restrictions on amount of passengers and the time you can drive. For instance in Tennessee, 16 year olds with a restricted license can’t drive from 11 p.m-6 a.m and can only have one passenger in the car and
between those times teens won’t need to drive to jobs or after school activities.
Furthermore, in an article written by the New York Times named, “Should the Driving Age Be Raised to 18,” it states, “Cars are necessary for mobility… taking that away is a large disruption to the lives of teenagers- for no
good reason.” This is very important for allowing teens to make money at jobs, go to sports and band practice, or going to eat out at restaurants after school. This also connects back to the claim of the driving age being halted at 16 because high schoolers wouldn’t be able to drive during their high school years and it would be really hard for them to commute from school to after-school activities. Another piece of evidence from the Chicago Tribune by Ted Gregory named, “Should 16 years old?” for instance it states that, “There’s no mass transit to get to work, to get to jobs.” There’s not transportation from the school to get to the high schoolers activities, thus if they don’t have transportation it’ll create a very complicated and nerve racking schedule.
