Driving in India

Traveling in India is an almost hallucinatory mixture of sound and sight. It is frequently heart-rending, sometimes hilarious, mostly exhilarating, always unforgettable - and, when you are on the roads, extremely dangerous. Most Indian road users observe a version of the Highway Code based on some ancient text or on the position of the moon. In general the 12 rules of the Indian road code are:

ARTICLE I

The assumption of immortality is required of all road users.

ARTICLE II

The following Order of Precedence must be accorded at all times. In descending order give way to: cows, elephants, heavy trucks, buses, official cars, camels, light trucks, buffalo, jeeps, ox-carts, private cars, motorcycles, scooters, auto-rickshaws, pigs, pedal rickshaws, goats, bicycles carrying goods, handcarts, bicycles carrying passenger(s), dogs, pedestrians.

ARTICLE III

All wheeled vehicles shall be driven in accordance with the maxim: to slow is to falter, to brake is to fail, to stop is defeat. This is the Indian drivers' mantra.

ARTICLE IV

Use of horn: Cars (IV, 1, a-c): Short blasts indicate supremacy, i.e. in clearing dogs, rickshaws and pedestrians from path. Long blasts denote supplication, i.e. to oncoming truck, "I am going too fast to stop, so unless you slow down we shall both die". In extreme cases this may be accompanied by flashing of headlights. Single casual blast means "I have seen someone out of India's 870 million people whom I recognize", "There is a bird in the road (which at this speed could go through my windscreen)", or "I have not blown my horn for several minutes." Trucks and buses (IV, 2, a): All horn signals have the same meaning, "I have a gross weight of 12.5 tons and have no intention of stopping, even if I could." This signal may be emphasized by the use of headlights. Article IV remains subject to the provision of Order of Precedence in
Article II above.

ARTICLE V

All manoeuvres, use of horn and evasive

Diana Ahmad in The Opium Debate and Chinese Exclusion Laws in the Nineteenth-Century American West (University of Nevada Press, 2007) argues that in addition to the traditional explanations for the Chinese Exclusion Act, (economic, political and more recently, prostitution) smoking opium was part of the reason many Anglo-Americans pushed for Chinese exclusion. Ahmad also distinguishes smoking-opium and medicinal-opium as two separate entities, claiming that it was the smoking variety that offended the moral character of Anglo-Americans.…

The older you are the wiser you will have become is a classic saying that adorns the elderly with experience and wisdom. One might recall endless stories beginning with “back in my day,” but what about the stories in present-day? Countless senior citizens have provided some interesting news stories for reporters in recent years; major accidents, which many have only seen in movies, have become real life due to elderly driving. In 2003, George Weller, an 89-year old man sped into a local farmers market. Ten people died and seventy were left injured. (CBS News). USA Today reported about a Elizabeth Grimes, a 90-year old woman, who was seen backing out of her driveway, across the lawn, and onto the adjacent curb. Only six blocks away she ran through a red light and slammed into a “17 year old high school junior who was driving to school to take an algebra test. Five days later she died.( Davis and DeBarros).” Westport news describes further accidents:…

Do you text while driving? Ashley Halsey’s topic on “laws against texting while driving are ineffective” by: Ashley Halsey. Ashley Halsey discusses why laws and new laws for “texting while driving are ineffective” and fails to meet an impact. Ashley Halsey reminds us that “texting while driving” can lead up to fatal crashes and distractions in the U.S. (par.1). Laws and new laws failed to meet an agreement. (par.1). She states that “cell phone bans around the country might take years to become effective, (par.1) just like drunk driving laws before them” said Ashley Halsey. (par.1). Ashley’s article about “Laws against Texting While Driving Are Ineffective” is very explainable. I agree with Ashley Halsey’s point about why laws and new laws failed to meet an impact with “texting while driving” being an issue.…

Throughout time man has made odd excuses to explain why the moon changes its shape. In Inuit legend, Anningan the moon god fasts while the moon is waning then on a new moon he comes down to hunt. He then returns to the sky then the moon waxes as he eats his game till he is “full”. Then the process repeats itself. The name of the cycle when the moons evident shape changes is identified as moon phases. The separate “faces” of the moon are called, in this order, New Moon, New Crescent, First Quarter, New Gibbous, Full Moon, Old Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Old Crescent.…
