Dependence on the cell phone is one of the most defining features of the 21st century. This situation is due to cell phones proving to be convenient devices and practical for real-time communication. However, this dependency has seen people use cell phones in all situations, even when driving. Accordingly, this development has led to a converse increase in road accidents related to mobile usage while driving in spite of existing legislation. Porter (2006) explains that experienced drivers and novices revealed that the long distance drivers used cell phones and caffeine as coping methods during long shifts. The same survey shows that cellphones as a potential distraction while driving. Besides, the increase in the use visual content available on cell phones is a safety risk as is dialing, texting, and answering, distracting behaviors. Further, a review of studies done, 2006-2014, using video recordings, and corresponding forensic data indicate that cell phone manipulation while driving is a large risk to road safety (McCartt, Kidd & Teoh, 2014). Naturally, once a driver looks away from the road to attend to any other activity there is a shift in focus. Moreover, observations show different ways to manage long shifts and night driving these include regular break stops, refraining from the use of a cellphone, and reduced smoking. Images and graphics make a lasting impression on the mind with many people believing what they see in commercials. Further, they will imitate what celebrities do in these adverts. For instance, an image of a celebrity driving while taking a “selfie” sends a message to their fans: it is acceptable to drive and take photos at the same time. The above is a total misrepresentation of the potential dangers of distracted driving. Instead, mobile phone companies need to adopt methods to create awareness on ways to use cellphones maturely. The public is free to enjoy that power of modern technology. Conversely, they need to understand that with such power comes great responsibility (Alters & Schiff, 2013). Law enforcement should impose liability policies on irresponsible advertising concerning mobile usage while driving. The more people read about the potential dangers of using cellphones while driving, the more sensitizes they become with to the implications of the abuse. Also, authorities need to implement stiff penalties on those caught driving while using their cellphones, these should not be limited to monetary fines (Howard, 2002).
