Rock and roll music ethics are usually concerned about the most important topics like equality, freedom, non – conformity and individualism. Drug abusing is a big part of the subculture that falls under rock and roll music. “Straight Edge is a movement spawned within the hardcore scene in the '80s. Its followers have made a commitment to abstain from using drugs, alcohol and tobacco products.” (Cooper). Straight edge was a movement in 1980’s where the government tried stopping the drug and alcohol abuse by not giving it to underage kids at clubs or anywhere the rock and roll band was performed. Abusing drugs, alcohol, and sex was and still is a norm for the rock and roll industry. These new ideas or norms were emerged from a lot of the most popular bands which were played later at night music than normal music times, which also has a different way of playing the music and not too much of lyrical verse. “Led Zeppelin is a prominent example of the trend in the 1960s and ‘70s of long, extended songs that focus more on theatric instrumentals than a lyrical motive.” (Hanner). Led Zeppelin some of the lyrics talked about how romance, casual sexual encounters was a part of a normal routine which had a big impact on the followers of punk music ethics.
Rock and roll is irresponsible and potentially dangerous in its casual and sometimes cavalier treatment of drug use and sex. Sid Vicious was a member of Sex pistols, he was a heavy drug user. He had a destructive relationship with his girlfriend because of both of their heavy drug usage. His relationship with others was very aggressive after recreationally using drugs. Later in his life he was arrested for killing his girlfriend after using heavy dosage of drugs.
