People who possess drugs get sent to jail, but how is this supposed to help them defeat their drug addiction?
Drug addicts are not criminals! Their crimes are a result of their addiction. They need help!
Drug addicts being sent to jail is like putting a sick dog in a cage. Wouldn't you help the sick dog? Wouldn't you help the drug addicts?
Drug addicts shouldn’t be treated like criminals. They should be helped by the people who are able to help them.
The reasoning behind sending people to prison is to ensure the safety of the citizens and to benefit society itself. Sending drug addicts to prison will not be helpful to them, and therefore not helpful to society either.
60-80% of drug abusers in The United States commit a new crime after release from prison. These crimes are a result of the addiction, not a result of the drug addicts wanting to perform criminal activity. Helping these drug addicts will reduce crime, and therefore help society.
Most prisons in America don't have the resources or the money to treat drug addiction. This means, when they get out of jail, the same thing will happen over and over and over again. In fact, 95% of drug abusers return to using drugs after being released from prison. What's the point of this? This is a waste of taxpayer’s money. They will just be in and out of jail, like the ebb and flow of the ocean.
With these facts we can conclude that the current method for dealing with drug addicts does not work! And maybe we have to ask ourselves if prisons are at all the right environment for people dealing with these types of problems. And we have to look further to see who can help these addicts.
