Adolescents who experiment with drugs normally do not have the facts of each drug and will normally start out with less harsh ones which eventually lead to the hardcore drugs as well as possibly alcohol. Adolescents who do not completely understand the consequences of these drugs are not fully aware of how these drugs can harm their bodies or how addictive they can turn out to be as well as some of the shameful things they may do in order to support their habit; they sure are not going to understand why these drugs are unsafe. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health states that 8% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, which is over 2 million, in the United States meet diagnostic criteria for abuse or dependence on illicit drugs. Some studies show that the most susceptible teenagers are those in the “popular” group, because they pay attention to what their peers value. While other studies show that the teenagers who socially are not accepted have a higher likelihood of using, and becoming addicted to, drugs.…

According to studies adolescents who experienced substance abuse gave several reasons in why they turned to drugs or alcohol such as “my friends pressured me” or “I wanted to feel good and get high,” “to have a good time with friends,” or to “escape from my problems” (Titus, Godley & White 2006, p33.). Peer pressure is one of the main reasons teenagers and young adults in North America decide to experiment and try new things. This kind of pressure often leads young people to use different types of drugs such as cigarettes, alcohol, and very frequently, marijuana. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) believe that "one of the results of this widespread marijuana use is that many teens have friends who are making some unhealthy choices" (Monitor Your Child's Activities, 2004). Trying to fit in and be accepted, teenagers feel they have to coincide with the crowd. It is a common belief for young people that if you go against what your peers are doing then you will not be liked. Adolescence can be a very difficult and confusing time; this stage of life can make people weak and vulnerable to the influences around them. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) gathered evidence that "22 percent…

The end result of peer pressure can cause an impact on the academic performance in school. According to an article in the Green Haven Press, one reason why some of those students will go on to use is because as students age, pressure increases. Most commonly, the pressure to use begins at about middle school, although some students said their first encounters with drugs occurred when they were as young as 8. That exposure increases and is especially strong in high school, when parties become commonplace and kids are more rebellious. (Dudley, 2002) Many teens said the need to belong underlies the appeal of drug use. High schooler Joe Felion of St. Paul wrote, "If you ask an adolescent what the most important thing to them is, the answer will probably not be family, school or religion. More often than not the answer will be friends.... It is no surprise that they will do anything to fit in." (Dudley,…

People take drugs because they want to change something about their lives. They think drugs are a solution; but eventually, the drugs become the problem. Difficult as it may be to face one’s problems, the consequences of drug use are always worse than the problem one is trying to solve with them. Here are some of the reasons young people have given me for taking drugs: To fit in, to escape or relax, to relieve boredom, to seem grown up, to rebel, and to experiment; my opinion in regards to these not so important reasons is to get the facts and not to take drugs in the first place; which eventually becomes addictive.…

Sometimes we as people have certain expectations that either don't end up getting done, or are out of our control. Most people that are induced to high amounts of stress are teenagers and young adults. How many teens deal with this stress varies, but the most commonly overseen way they chose to ease the stress is by the intake of drugs which leads to a repetitive abuse and addiction. One factor of the stress caused is School. For example, Many kids at my own school smoke weed when being stressed out over a test or simple homework, especially during finals. Although they think smoking marijuana is harmless, and not an addictive drug, it becomes a habit of using the drug which leads to the abuse of it. I think this plays a major factor in the causes of substance abuse with teens because what teenagers and young adults don't understand, is that every time they are stressed about school and decide to smoke marijuana or whatever it is they take, that truly is a bad habit and is in fact abusing the substance. Therefore stress is certainly one of the main causes of substance abuse with teens and young…
